Hello Weed Nerds! So what your looking at is a male cannabis plant. Yes, cannabis comes in all different shapes, sizes, smells, and even sex! Plants that do come in male and female are known as dioecious. Sometimes you can even have a cannabis plant with both female and male parts. But that is something a grower does not want, unless a breeder is making Fem Seeds. But today I will talk specifically about male cannabis.

This particular male plant is Banana Punch x Mac and Cheese. I have picked this male out of the two as a stud. The terp profile stands out. Almost like a rotten fruit of some sort, and I mean this in a good way. I also decided on this one because it is dropping way more pollen then the other. So there you have it, a suitable stud to spread his love and joy to all the willing female cannabis plants, ;)

Now I will not let him run amuck. I have to keep this fellow caged, and away from all virgin cannabis. It is a shame I have no females in heat. At least not yet. This will happen very soon. There are two ways I can pregnant a female. The first way will be exactly like nature does it, wind pollination. But I am indoors, so I can just set a female that has been in flower for 20 days in the same room with my stud. After a few days, I will then take the female out, spray with water to deactivate any pollen residue, then set in the tent among the other females that will remain sensimilla.

The other way I can do it, is by controlled pollination. This is perfect if you do not want to have a whole plant seeded. So what I am doing is collecting the pollen from my stud. It is extremely important that you do not let moisture in. Once water hits the pollen, it is no good! So I am using rice to make sure this does not happen. Until the time comes to use the pollen, I will store in the fridge. Once I have a female ready, I will then get a Q-Tip to apply the pollen to the desired braches. It is of extreme importance that I do not let the pollen be blown on any nearby plants. So what I will do is set a plastic baggie on the buds that where pollinated for a few days. But I am thinking I will just do this in another room, that way I am sure that my other plants are not pollinated.

It is very important to know that male cannabis pollen is very potent stuff. There is enough pollen in a flower to seed an entire room! So if attempting to do this yourself, make sure you have a special place for your males, far away from your females. Also be considerate of your neighbors. If you know your neighbor is growing outdoors, and you have you setup outdoors, make you should bring your male inside. There are other ways to collect pollen. For instance, you can just cut off a cluster of flowers before they open, and set in a cup with water on the window seal, and collect the pollen. If all this sound like a headache to you, then make sure you cull any males out of your garden before its to late. Until next time my friends, stay tuned for more of my breeding updates, soon we will all name our very own strain!
