More than two thousand years after the supernatural events that constituted the preamble to one of the great milestones of the West, such as the discovery of the supposed remains of the Apostle Santiago the Greater in a dark corner of a forest, that of Libredón, in the that, millennia before Christianity was established, the Celtic priests, the druids, collected the mistletoe with their golden sickles, Compostela continues to be that inexhaustible source of mysteries and transcendental enigmas, where, sooner or later, every seeker ends up landing, not no longer of the unusual, but of an ancestral wisdom, which, far from being read like an open book, as Miguel de Unamuno stated with respect to the sublime cathedral of León, maintains its stubborn position of defiance, like another impassive Sphinx, waiting for the daring Oedipus capable of successfully passing the admission test to the mysteries, which is always that simile of a far-fetched code that is called a riddle.
Whether the adventures of a notable medieval alchemist, Nicholas Flamel, were real or imaginary, the truth is that his search for the Philosopher's Stone - which, as happens, for example, with the stories of the Grail, no one has yet fully agreed on what was, in reality - also ended here, in this place that attracts us all, in some way, with its unmistakable magnetism. And possibly it was also here, not precisely in the spectacular Portico of Glory, by Maestro Mateo, but in another portico less grandiose in essence, but much more cryptic and mysterious, that of Platerías, made by Maestro Esteban, where, at the view of that other Opus Magnum, marked by the representations of the creation of man - emerging from the nigredo of clay - the subsequent expulsion from Paradise, once the opposites were put into circulation throughout the world, the music of the spheres performed by an undaunted king David - as mysterious, in the end, as the famous smile of the Mona Lisa - and the presence of a no less enigmatic dead woman who holds a skull in her hands, chapters, all, developed alongside the figure of a demiurge of speculative Cathar influence, possibly make Compostela continue to be, far from a goal enveloped by the spectacular mists of its gigantic incense burners, the best example of a myth, that of the eternal return, from which we must depart and to which we must return, always in search of lost knowledge.
Más de dos mil años después de los sucesos sobrenaturales que constituyeron el preámbulo de uno de los grandes hitos de Occidente, como fue el descubrimiento de los supuestos restos del Apóstol Santiago el Mayor en un oscuro rincón de un bosque, el de Libredón, en el que, milenios antes de asentarse el Cristianismo, los sacerdotes celtas, los druidas, recolectaban el muérdago con sus hoces de oro, Compostela continúa siendo esa fuente inagotable de misterios y de enigmas trascendentales, donde, tarde o temprano, termina recalando todo buscador, no ya de lo insólito, sino de una sabiduría ancestral, que, lejos de dejarse leer como un libro abierto, tal y como afirmaba Miguel de Unamuno con respecto a la sublime catedral de León, mantiene su obstinada posición de desafío, cual otra Esfinge impasible, esperando al atrevido Edipo capaz de salir airoso de la prueba de admisión a los misterios, que es siempre ese símil de código rebuscado que recibe el nombre de acertijo.
Fueran reales o imaginarias las andanzas de un notable alquimista medieval, Nicolás Flamel, lo cierto es que su búsqueda de la Piedra Filosofal -que, como ocurre, por ejemplo, con las historias del Grial, nadie termina todavía de ponerse de acuerdo acerca de qué era, en realidad- terminaba también aquí, en este lugar que a todos nos atrae, de alguna manera, con su inequívoco magnetismo. Y posiblemente fuera también aquí, no precisamente en el espectacular Pórtico de la Gloria, del Maestro Mateo, sino en otro pórtico menos grandioso en esencia, pero mucho más críptico y misterioso, el de Platerías, realizado por el Maestro Esteban, donde, a la vista de esa otra Opus Magnum, señalada por las representaciones de la creación del hombre -saliendo del nigredo del barro- la posterior expulsión del Paraíso, una vez puestos en circulación los opuestos por el mundo, la música de las esferas interpretada por un impertérrito rey David -tan misteriosa, en el fondo, como la famosa sonrisa de la Gioconda- y la presencia de una no menos enigmática mujer muerta que sostiene una calavera entre sus manos, capítulos, todos, desarrollados a la vera de la figura de un demiurgo de especulativa influencia cátara, hacen, posiblemente, que Compostela continúe siendo, lejos de una meta envuelta por las espectaculares brumas de sus gigantescos incensarios, el mejor ejemplo de un mito, el del eterno retorno, del que hay que partir y al que hay que regresar, siempre en busca de un saber perdido.
