Those who come to Santillana for the first time may not notice and pass by, being impressed by the façade and the monumental noble coat of arms of an old Gothic palace, currently converted into the main hotel of a town that, nevertheless, and despite everything, remains stubbornly linked to its splendorous past. But a few metres from it, to the mystery of the keen and curious eye, an old Pasiegan mansion displays on the white façade of its balcony a curious advertisement: Salón del Tiempo (Time Hall). A detail that can be understood, in my humble opinion, as a remnant of those times when neighbourhood meetings, called filandones, involved that metaphorical communal school, where stories, legends and gossip helped to keep the sacred ties of friendship and Tradition firm.
The curious thing is that, just a few insignificant meters from there, once inside that no less metaphorical fortress of vanity, which, in essence, is its ancient and medieval helmet, one has the sensation, contemplating that incredible cultural heritage, that time, by some uncertain paradox, seems to have stopped as well and that, as Borges affirmed in his irreducible essays of cultured Metaphysics, yesterday continues to be today and by default, also the still.
Quien llega por primera vez a Santillana, quizás no se percate y pase de largo, dejándose impresionar por la fachada y el monumental escudo nobiliario que luce un antiguo palacio gótico, actualmente reconvertido en el principal hotel de un pueblo, que, no obstante, y a pesar de todo, continúa obstinadamente unido a su esplendoroso pasado. Pero a escasos metros de éste, para misterio del ojo avizor y curioso, una vieja casona pasiega, luce en la blanca fachada de su balconada, un curioso anuncio: Salón del Tiempo. Detalle que se puede entender, bajo mi humilde punto de vista, como un retazo de aquellos tiempos en los que las reuniones vecinales, llamadas filandones, conllevaban esa metafórica escuela comunal, donde los cuentos, las leyendas y los cotilleos ayudaban a mantener firmes los lazos sagrados de la amistad y de la Tradición.
Lo curioso es, que, a apenas unos insignificantes metros de allí, una vez adentrados en ese no menos metafórico fortín de la vanidad, que, en el fondo, es su antiguo y medieval casco, uno tiene la sensación, contemplando ese increíble patrimonio cultural, de que el tiempo, por alguna incierta paradoja, parece haberse detenido también y que, tal y como afirmaba Borges en sus irreductibles ensayos de culta Metafísica, el ayer continúa siendo el hoy y por defecto, también el todavía.
