Rudy Kurniawan nació en 1976, en Jakarta, Indonesia. Entonces no se llamaba Rudy, se llamaba Zheng Wang Huang, nombre que le pusieron sus padres que eran de origen chino.

Rudy Kurniawan was born in 1976, in Jakarta, Indonesia. He was not called Rudy then, he was called Zheng Wang Huang, a name given to him by his parents who were of Chinese origin.

When he finished high school, he traveled to the United States, like so many others, in search of the American dream. He actually came to study at California State University, Los Angeles. He noted that the best come out of California. I have not been able to find what degree he studied, but I have found that he had arrived with a student visa that expired in 2001. He then requested political asylum in the United States, but was denied and ordered to leave the country.

And what did Rudy Kurniawan do then? Go back to Indonesia? NO! He was left in the land of opportunity illegally, because he was a hungry, talented, and witty twenty-something.

Rudy Kurniawan entró en la tienda Woodland Hills Wine Company. Tenía 24 años, caminaba algo tímido y llevaba el pelo engominado hacia atrás. En el mostrador lo atendió Kyle Smith. Rudy Kurniawan walked into the Woodland Hills Wine Company store. He was 24 years old, walked somewhat shy and had his hair slicked back. At the counter he was served by Kyle Smith. Rudy showed him a bottle of wine: it was a 1998 California Cabernet. He said he got it pretty cheap, and he wanted to do business.

This was Rudy's first of many visits to Kyle's store. He came back again and again with many bottles, but above all with many questions. He wanted to know everything about French wines: their aromas, their different varieties of grapes and their production process.

Kyle Smith ended up becoming his friend and mentor. He introduced him to California wine collecting circles, and everyone was left in awe of Rudy's talent.

Poco a poco se fue haciendo conocido en California, lugar donde, en los inicios de los 2000 se estaba cociendo una nueva tendencia en el sector de los vinos: el vino de Borgoña.

Borgoña es una región vinícola de Francia que se extiende a lo largo de 250 kilómetros desde el norte de Chablis al sur de la región de Mâcon. Uno de sus vinos estrellas es el Romaneé Conti.

Una botella de Romaneé Conti de 1945 se vendió en una subasta por 558.000 dólares. El vino tinto más caro del mundo. Eso ocurrió en 2018.

Más de una década antes de aquella subasta, Rudy Kurniawan ya había comenzado su exploración de los vinos de Borgoña. Para 2003, tenía 27 años y aparecía en todas y cada una de las subastas de California, comprando vinos masivamente. Esta foto que veis a continuación, con la mano levantada y sonrisa de cabroncete, describe a la perfección a Rudy. Una vez empezaba a pujar no bajaba la mano hasta conseguir lo que quería.

He tasted the wines, smelled them, tasted them... And in six months his palate was surprisingly developed. It was what's known as a "supertaster," a skill attributed to a small percentage of people who have a greater number of taste buds than the average person.

But her greatest ability, really, was in her memory. While she tasted the wines, she took notes to memorize everything from the aromas to the different wineries and vintages.

Little by little, he became known in California, where, in the early 2000s, a new trend in the wine sector was brewing: Burgundy wine.

Burgundy is a wine region of France that stretches for 250 kilometers from the north of Chablis to the south of the Mâcon region. One of its star wines is the Romaneé Conti.

A bottle of 1945 Romaneé Conti sold at auction for $558,000. The most expensive red wine in the world. That happened in 2018.

More than a decade before that auction, Rudy Kurniawan had already begun his exploration of Burgundy wines. By 2003, he was 27 years old and showing up at every auction in California, buying wine in droves. This photo that you see below, with his hand raised and a smile like a bastard, perfectly describes Rudy. Once he started bidding he wouldn't put his hand down until he got what he wanted..

Eso sí, tuvo que aguantarse y no emocionarse demasiado porque la madre de Rudy pensaba que eran vinos de unos veinte dólares. O eso le había dicho Rudy.

A todo esto, Kyle se preguntó de dónde salía el dinero de Rudy. Cómo es que podía pujar por tantos vinos tan caros. Rudy era muy reservado, no le gustaba hablar del tema, pero dejó caer que su familia era rica, o que tenían algún tipo de negocio en Indonesia.

Investigando por ahí dicen en un documental que los tíos de Rudy son Hendra Rahardja y Eddy Tansil, que cometieron un fraude bancario en Indonesia en el que desaparecieron 800 millones de dólares. A lo mejor a esos negocios se refería. Y a lo mejor por eso se cambió de nombre a Rudy Kurniawan, un apellido común en Indonesia y que significa “Amor y felicidad”.

Pero esta parte de la historia sigue envuelta en misterio, así sigamos adelante, hasta el lugar donde los planes de Rudy comenzaría a hacerse realidad: Nueva York.

Of course, he had to hold it and not get too excited because Rudy's mother thought they were twenty-dollar wines. Or so Rudy had told him.

To all this, Kyle wondered where Rudy's money came from. How is it that he could bid on so many expensive wines. Rudy was very reserved, he didn't like to talk about it, but he hinted that his family was rich, or that they had some kind of business in Indonesia.

Investigating out there, they say in a documentary that Rudy's uncles are Hendra Rahardja and Eddy Tansil, who committed a bank fraud in Indonesia in which 800 million dollars disappeared. Maybe it was those businesses he was referring to. And maybe that's why he changed his name to Rudy Kurniawan, a common surname in Indonesia that means "Love and happiness."

But this part of the story is still shrouded in mystery, so let's move on, to the place where Rudy's plans would begin to come true: New York.

From the hand of John Kapon, Rudy learned about the world of young billionaires in New York. They wore expensive suits, drove big cars, and spent more than $70,000 on any given dinner. Those dinners were a bit to see who had the biggest, to see who brought the most expensive bottle. And Rudy wanted to be like them, so he started dressing in custom-made Hermes suits, alligator boots, Patek Phillipe watches, and driving cars like this.

He became the leader of the 12 Angry Men, a circle of young wine-loving millionaires, including John Kapon himself.

The thing is, they all got excited every time they knew that Rudy was going to go to one of the dinners. Everyone was waiting to see what kind of wine Rudy would arrive with. They admired him. They used to be very difficult wines to find, and no one knew how he got it, but he surpassed himself at every dinner.

According to Vanity Fair magazine, at Rudy's mother's birthday dinner, there were quite a few celebrities at the table. Among them: Jackie Chan. And according to what they say, he ended up "happy" by climbing on a chair, with a bottle in his hand and shouting: Rudy, you are the best!

Up to that point his fame was coming. Of course, there was a strange pattern in his behavior: after each dinner, when he brought some wine to the restaurant, he always demanded that the used bottles be sent back to him. He did the same if he brought a bottle to a friend's house.

Some would even say that his personality changed with this topic. If the restaurant forgot to send the bottles, or if any of them broke, Rudy would get extremely upset, even angry. It was a disproportionate reaction in the eyes of others. What they didn't know, of course, was why Rudy wanted the bottles back. That was his secret. His big scam.
