Some years ago, when I was much younger, I heard someone say that each individual on earth has someone who isn't related to them in any way but has a striking resemblance with them in another city or part of the world. Like you are from Nigeria, and there's another person who looks exactly like you in Kenya or Nairobi. Do you think this is possible?
Now imagine that someone you don't know from anywhere sees you and calls you a name that isn't yours, claiming they know you. And when you tell them that you aren't whom they think you are, they look utterly surprised, exclaiming that you have a striking resemblance with the person they were referring to.
Has this ever happened to you before?
Well I didn't believe this can really happen not until I experienced it.
I've had someone say that I resemble one of his old friends from Ghana. It happened that I was traveling so while waiting for the vehicle I boarded to get filled up so we can commence the journey, a guy came in and sat beside me. Immediately he sat down, he called me a name I can't remember now. When I didn't answer he touched me. I turned and looked at him inquiringly to know why he touched me. He now asked why I'm behaving as if I don't recognize him again. When I saw how serious he was, I had to tell him my name and where I come from. He couldn't believe that I wasn't his old friend, hehehe. Well we became friends after that.
Same surprised shock was what another lady felt when I told her that I wasn't her village sister as she thought I was. During my service year, I had a friend from Jos, Plateau state. One day he told me that the number one reason he approached me was because I looked exactly like his late mother. Even two of his course mates who were serving with us said same thing but when he showed me her picture, I didn't see any resemblance.
In all of these it made me reason that who knows it might be just their imaginations playing some tricks on them.
Another one is the way people mistake I and my elder sister, they say that we resemble each other a lot. Whenever I ask some of them to show me where the resemblance between us is, they just say that it's obvious, you people look alike, just like twins. Ha! imagine calling I and my elder sister twins, abeg oo.
But personally I don't seem to see any resemblance, maybe because I'm the one involved.
Sis and I
My sister is on the fairer side, prettier, have a more welcoming and cheerful face with more body size while I'm chocolate colored, has a slender body with a serious face, lol. The age gap is even much because a guy was born after her, who's my immediate elder brother yet all these doesn't stop the mistaken identity.
My Sister
It's either they say I am her or the other way round. The surprising thing is that some people who knew us right from childhood still make this mistake and it's just too embarrassing. I can't even recall the number of times that I have to correct some of them. Like what's so confusing about us that they can't tell who is who.
There's this old aunt of ours, she'll always call me my sister's name.
There was a day she went to the market and as she passed this shop, the owner started calling her my name and when she didn't answer, she had to tell her next neighbor to help call her attention. When she finally stopped and looked at the lady unknowingly, the lady asked why was she pretending not to have recognized her again. She called her name and said they attended same high school. It was then my sister told her that she mistook her to be me which she wasn't and that she's my elder sister. Surprise was written all over the lady's face due to the supposed resemblance. She had to apologize and told her to send regards to me.
This is the same type of drama I experience whenever I meet someone who knows her. It's just too much. These days when I hear someone call me her name, I'll just pretend not to hear, I don't want more dramas. Can you imagine that even some of her husband's kinsmen usually call me their wife whenever I visit there. Like they don't know how their own wife looks like again, hehehe. I remember the day she called me saying that one of her husband's friends saw them at an event and complained that she refused answering him the other day he was calling her at an event. She had to tell him that it wasn't her but her sister.
These days whenever I come across anyone who looks at me intently like someone they know, I'll just get ready for some identity drama because it's I'll be called her name or asked if I'm her sister. Like there's no one who knows her that wouldn't see me and behave in either ways. I can't be myself again in peace, arrhhh!
Although I know that it's very much possible for two separate individuals from the same biological affiliation, who aren't twins, to have same qualities or some resemblance but for I and my sister, I think people are just exaggerating it, hehehe.
So dear friends, do you think they are right?
