What Is GHAWG?
#GHAWG is short for "God's Hog: A Watchful Guardian." This fictional story tells how David Guardia, a courier and business owner from Bayonne, New Jersey, US moved into the next phase of his life after spending the final ten years of his ailing father's life helping him.
More details can be found in the first post of this weekly recap.

I-90 from Spokane to Seattle played tricks with us. From Spokane to Tokio & Ritzville, it took us closer to Oregon. Then it stayed paralell to Oregon until we hit Ellensburg and took us back toward Canada. WA-2 was straighter. |
---|
ποΈ These were interesting place names, so I wanted to use them. ποΈ While Washington State Route 2 followed a straigher path than Interstate 90, it would have made for a boring ride. No amount of state-of-the-art GPS devices would have solved the problem Our Heroes ran into on this part of the ride through Washington. |

As it was, we reached Seattle in 3 days. Since Harry's last trip there 15 years earlier, The Emerald City had turned sickly pale. It was less vibrant and more ill. That's what happens when people care about the wrong things. |
---|
ποΈ As recently as 2019, I knew of Seattle as an artsy and quirky city known for grunge music and as Starbucks' point of origin. I also knew it as a major league city in several North American professional sports leagues. Since 2020, it's been afflicted with the same ailments as New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Chicago, Minneapolis, and many other major cities across the land: soft on crime policies and the incentivization of crime. It didn't need to be this way, and (even in the zapfic serial) it's the regular people who pay the price for the few people who want to feel good about policies they put in place. |

For the most part, people left us alone. Maybe it was because most of us were Mongols, or they were too focused on their daily fix. It's not what I had imagined, that much I knew. Could I expect this when we ride into Portland? |
---|
ποΈ That was just a continuation of the previous zapfic entry. Along with homeless encampments on the sidewalks of certain areas are patches of sidewalk where open air drug use takes place. Many times, what happens in Seattle is reflected in Portland, Oregon and vice versa. Both cities will return to being tourist hot-spots, but it will take time. |

During a rest stop I discovered an Army & Navy store which also sold work clothes. An instruction flashed before me. When I returned, I handed my crew yellow construction coats with phosphorescent stripes and detachable sleeves. |
---|
ποΈ Army & Navy stores sell work clothes, small outdoor accessories, and a few uniform accessories such as belts and gloves. Despite the name, anyone can go shopping in these stores. |

Even The Mongols looked at me as if was crazy. "This is what we're going to wear when we ride through Portland," I said. "You didn't get any for my guys?" asked Harry. "It's not my place to tell a Mongol how to dress, Harry." |
---|
ποΈ The Mongols had their distinctive motorcycle club vests, and who is to tell them to dress any other way? I figured that was up to their leader or seniormost Mongol present. ποΈ Since David Guardia's mission was to have the riders pass through Portland, Oregon during the night, his people needed to stand out and be seen from far away. What he found at the Army & Navy store was perfect for that mission. |

"My mission started by delivering a message to Harry," I began. "That message also had a message for me: To ride through Portland at night. Today I realized that a few of us would be wearing yellow vests. So I bought a few." |
---|
ποΈ Not simply yellow vests: safety yellow vests, like contractors on a roadside project and like stranded motorists in distress. David Guardia wears something similar, which was part of his uniform as a motorcycle courier back in Bayonne, New Jersey, US. |

"If my instructions are coming to me as I need them," I continued, "then everything will come into focus as the moment draws near. I can't explain exactly what we're to accomplish, but I trust in The Lord who led us this far." |
---|
ποΈ Before coming out of his 10-day coma back at the hospital in Le Claire, Iowa, US, The Lord had told him that he would receive instructions as he needed them. This was one of those times. Almost killed, David Guardia was fully healed when his coma ended. This didn't happen on its own, and he knew that. So he has full faith in a Higher Power, The Lord. |

Story Arc So Far
Our Heroes ride across Washington State from Spokane to Seattle. Even Harry Hoqualogue was saddened to see Seattle as a shell of its former self as he had seen it 15 years earlier. Although it would be some time before they would make their ride through Portland, Oregon, US, David Guardia was moved to buy yellow vests for the riders following him (among them, Rhonda Bella, Hank & Frank Marchenko, Sanjay Rampersad, and Lionel Odunsi). David felt himself being guided by The Lord as Our Heroes ride through Seattle on their way to Portland. Something was going to happen in Seattle.

Hoping to ride out of Seattle without incident, Our Heroes are met by a band of down-and-out people left to fend for themselves since local government had failed them at every opportunity. They need a champion to speak for them, and David Guardia will serve that purpose in his capacity as a Prophet of The Lord.
(Due to the nature of the zapfic entries for the following weekly summary post, 12 entries will be featured rather than the usual 7.)
At LeoThreads
The serial rolls on at LeoThreads where Our Heroes ride south through Oregon along the Oregon Coast Highway (Oregon Route 101). Lindsay Etxeberria, the demonstrator David Guardia picked up back in in Portland, is getting to know the people who ride with David (including Rhonda Bella, The Brothers Marchenko, Sanjay Rampersad, and Lionel Odunsi). They accept her at face value, but she still has things to sort out in her mind.
