What Is GHAWG?
#GHAWG is short for "God's Hog: A Watchful Guardian." This fictional story tells how David Guardia, a courier and business owner from Bayonne, New Jersey, US moved into the next phase of his life after spending the final ten years of his ailing father's life helping him.
More details can be found in the first post of this weekly recap.

It was after we passed Quapaw that confirmed that ALT 69 was over Old Route 66. Digital maps showed it as US Route 66 and US Bicycle Route 66. After we crossed into Kansas and Baxter Springs the name changed to Military Avenue. |

ยย๐๏ธยย This zapfic entry sounded better in my head than it did after I published it. I must have fat-fingered something along the way. ๐๏ธยย Kansas is the state with the fewest miles of road used for Route 66. It's the only state in which Felix Legion would not have any overnight stays or layovers. |
5๏ธโฃ2๏ธโฃ8๏ธโฃ 2024-July-29 21:39:36
Before we left town we took pitstop at the Baxter Springs, Kansas Route 66 Visitor's Center. A few miles NE was the Riverton FFA Route 66 Sign/Sculpture. It was here where we rode off Route 400 onto Road 66 going into Riverton. |
---|
ยย๐๏ธยย Even though Kansas had the fewest miles of Route 66, it wasn't enough reason for Felix Legion to stay as tourists. or Felix Legion, it was simply a case of bad timing. The stop at the Rout 66 Visitor's Center was going to be the most site-seeing Felix Legion would do while in Kansas. |

1.25 miles past Galena we crossed into Missouri. 5 miles east was Joplin, the 1st notable town. Fans familiar with the song "Route 66" will note some versions of the song fail to mention Joplin; other words appear in its place. |
---|
ยย๐๏ธยย The lyrics to the iconic song, "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66" were written by Bobby Troup. The song, interpreted by countless music artists for decades, was first sung by Nat King Cole in 1946. Versions of the song between 1946 and 1961 included "Joplin" in the lyrics at the point where it touched on Missouri. When Rolling Stones perfomed this song in 1964, Joplin was left out. Since then, some versions include Joplin while others don't. My version of choice, performed in the late 20th Century by Depeche Mode, excludes Joplin. |

Nearly 7 miles north & east of Joplin was Webb City, another well-populated town. We could tell that the rest of our ride along Old Route 66 would look more like what my ride was like from Bayonne, New Jersey to Davenport, Iowa. |
---|
ยย๐๏ธยย Through California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma, much of Old Route 66 went through sparesly populated areas, and the dominant color palette was that of the desert. Once in Kansas (for 13 to 30 miles), more population centers appeared and the dominant color palettes were those of the suburbs and the cities. It also helped being in close proximity, relatively speaking, to the Mississipi River. Oddly enough, it was on the desert portion of Old Route 66 where the more facinating tourist attractions were located. |
5๏ธโฃ3๏ธโฃ1๏ธโฃ 2024-August-01 18:49:15
The next population center we passed through was Carthage. Nearly 10 miles later we stopped at the 66 One Stop just outside Avila to refuel and have a bite to eat. After Avila we would be riding through less populated areas. |
---|
ยย๐๏ธยย Less-populated areas could still be found on this stretch of Old Route 66, but they were becoming fewer and fewer as Felix Legion motored east. The character of the road and the ride east would be changing, that much was certain. How it would be changing remains a mystery (even to me). |
5๏ธโฃ3๏ธโฃ2๏ธโฃ 2024-August-02 16:50:51
The next notable area for us along Old Route 66 is Spencer. After leaving Avila, we would ride nearly 23.5 miles through these places: Plew, Rescue, Phelps, Albatross, & Heatonville. Pleasant scenery, but nothing eye-catching. |
---|
ยย๐๏ธยย No Guardian Lions, and no giant Muffler Men. Nothing out of the ordinary or bigger than life to be seen here, just nice low-key scenery as Felix Legion continued its ride east along Old Route 66. |
5๏ธโฃ3๏ธโฃ3๏ธโฃ 2024-August-03 19:12:30
We rode from Spencer to Halltown, where we turned south onto South Dogwood Drive in order to switch from Old Highway 66 to US Rte 66 overlaid by I-44. For 10 miles it was relatively empty, but then it got busier at Springfield. |
---|
ยย๐๏ธยย This is another in a series of travel entries showing Felix Legion on the move. It was around this point when I decided (at least for now) on a way to move the story along: alternate travel entries with character development entries. |

Story Arc So Far
Felix Legion continues its ride east along Old Route 66. At this point, Felix Legion is in Missouri riding east and north toward the terminus of Old Route 66 in Chicago, Illinois, US.
