My mother started dating other men around a year after she and my father got a divorce, that, of course, in private, and she'd only tell me about it if the relationship became serious. Of course, that's the case in which you'd accept to be presented to your girlfriend's daughter. In total, I only had two stepfathers, and one of them(the one that came first) is a topic that me and my mother try to avoid at all costs...it was almost traumatic. But, my current stepfather is the best we could ever wish for, and they're completely happy with their relationship.
Me and my stepfather have a great relationship, we're good friends and there's no dark undertone to our relationship, such as "I'm only being nice to you because you date my mother/I date your mother", which is really really good, keeping in mind that depending on the person, that could be the exact opposite.
From the terrible relationship I had with the former boyfriend of my mother, the one I mentioned early, I learned a lot about how to behave and act if you don't want to have that unsettling and dark atmosphere around you whenever you're in their presence. But, since me and my stepfather have a genuine good relationship, that happens naturally.
Then, not so long ago, a little twist happened in my life. I got into a romantic relationship myself, and became a...dun dun dun! Stepmother!
Oh yes...the moment we decided that it was time for me and my partner's daughter to meet I was definitely not ready for something like that, and, in my mind, it seemed a lot more difficult than it was. I need to reinforce, it was not difficult at all.
Now, I knew that there was this necessity of being more delicate when it came to my relationship with my stepdaughter, because she's still only a kid. At this point, I noticed that the experience I had with stepdaughter-stepfather relationships would not help me that much with being a good stepmother, because, when I had to get to know a stepfather, I was not that young, so this would be a completely new experience.
This point in my life was demanding for me to be mature, and that's exactly what I was determined to do. And so I did.

Time went on and things happened, and so big girl and little girl met. Even though I was very nervous that day, me and my partner's daughter ended up getting along very well and from the beginning I could know that it would be easy for us to be friends from that point on. And we really are.
I'm still slowly learning more about not only the relation between stepdaughter and stepmother, but also between daughter and father, and, between these moments of intense social studying and learning I have, we have a lot of fun together.
The key to have a good relationship with your stepdaughter is to understand and respect the space she needs to have and the difference between her relation with you and with her father. In the end, you're the wildcard there.
Sometimes, you'll end up facing a situation that you're not sure about how to handle it. Here and there, me and my boyfriend are caught in a conversation where he, for example, calls me "My love" and his daughter corrects him by saying "No, I am your love!". When something like this happens, you just have to keep in your mind and understand that she's not wrong about it, and there's no need to argue about something like this. There will never be a moment where creating arguments and discussions will be productive, so...just don't do it, there's no need to.

Minha mãe começou a namorar outros homens mais ou menos um ano depois que ela e meu pai se divorciaram, isso, claro, em privado, e ela só iria me contar sobre se o relacionamento estivesse se tornando sério. Claro, esse é o caso no qual você aceitaria ser apresentado à filha da sua namorada. No total, eu só tive dois padrastos, e um deles(o que veio primeiro) é um tópico que eu e minha mãe evitamos ao máximo...foi uma experiência quase traumática. Mas, meu atual padrasto é o melhor que poderíamos desejar, e eles estão completamente felizes em seu relacionamento.
Eu e meu padrasto temos um ótimo relacionamento, somos bons amigos e não temos aquele sobretom sombrio de "Eu apenas sou legal com você porque você namora minha mãe/eu namoro sua mãe", o que é realmente muito bom, mantendo em mente que, dependendo da pessoa, isso podia ser o exato oposto. Do terrível relacionamento que tive com o ex-namorado da minha mãe, o que eu mencionei mais cedo, aprendi muito sobre como se comportar e como agir se você não quer ter aquela atmosfera inquietante e desconfortável sempre que estiver na presença do outro. Mas, já que tenho um relacionamento genuinamente bom com meu padrasto, isso ocorre naturalmente. Então, há não tanto tempo assim, uma reviravolta aconteceu na minha vida. Eu entrei em um relacionamento romântico e acabei em tornando...dã dã dã! Uma madrasta!
Ah sim, no momento em que decidimos que era tempo de eu e a filha do meu parceiro nos conhecermos, deu definitivamente não estava pronta para isso e, na minha mente, parecia muito mais difícil do que realmente foi. Reforçando, não foi nada difícil. Agora, eu sabia que havia a necessidade de ser um pouco mais delicada quando se tratava de ter um relacionamento com minha enteada, porque ela é ainda só uma criança. Nesse ponto, eu percebi que a experiência que eu tinha com relacionamentos de padrasto-enteada não me ajudaria tanto quanto pensei em ser uma boa madrasta, porque, na verdade, quando eu tive que conhecer um padrasto, eu não era tão nova quanto minha enteada é, então isso seria uma experiência completamente nova.
Esse momento da minha vida estava demandando que eu fosse uma pessoa madura, e isso era o que eu estava decidida a ser. Então eu fui.

O tempo passou e coisas aconteceram, e então a garotona conheceu a garotinha. Mesmo que eu estivesse bastante nervosa aquele dia, eu e a filha do meu namorado acabamos nos dando muito bem e, desde o começo, eu soube que seria fácil sermos boas amigas. E nós realmente somos. Eu ainda estou lentamente aprendendo mais sobre não só o relacionamento entre uma madrasta e enteada, mas também entre uma filha e o pai, e, entre meus intensos estudos sociais e aprendizado, nós nos divertimos muito juntos. A chave para ter um bom relacionamento com uma enteada é entender e respeitar o espaço que ela precisa e as diferenças entre o relacionamento de vocês e o relacionamento dela com seu pai. No fim, você que é o curinga ali. Às vezes, eu e meu namorado ainda nos encontramos em conversas nas quais, por exemplo, ele me chama de "Meu amor" e ela corrige, dizendo "Eu que sou o seu amor!". Quando algo assim ocorre, você só tem que manter em mente e entender que ela não está nem um pouco errada, e não há necessidade de discutir sobre isso. Nunca vai haver um momento onde criar discussões e brigas vai ser produtivo, então...só não faça isso, não há necessidade.
