You would agree with me that Nigerian mothers are just a different breed. They can scold you without saying a word or lifting their hands just a look from them would restore factory settings, hmmm and when they decide to beat you nko? Lord have mercy.
It's the hope of every child ( a responsible child at least) to be a blessing to his parents cos no caps they too try for us. However, Growing up I was not one to get gifts from people or send gifts and be all mushy mushy but on the other hand my elder sister was.
She would always get gifts for our Mum on her birthday, wedding anniversary, sometimes she'd just go out and come back with something for my mum. This made her my mum's favorite and she'd occasionally insult me and point to my sister and tell me how I am supposed to be living by her examples.
My mum would say 'it's not about the amount you bought the gift that matters but the thought you put into it"
This kept happening for a while until I eventually decided to be that good son that would get a gift for his mom on her birthday... It was a first for me so I didn't have a clue on what to buy and I honestly didn't want to ask my elder sister for help cos oh well she was mum's favorite and I wanted to change that.
I eventually decided I was going to get her a purse, at least she didn't have a lot of that plus that's all I could afford. I bought a rainbow colored purse, I thought she would be able to style it with whatever she was wearing since it had all the colors on it.
I got home, bounced to the kitchen where my mum was and presented the gift while singing the famous "happy birthday song". She looked at me and looked at the purse and said is this what you got for me? Excitedly I responded yes Mummy. She just shook her head and said thank you oo, God bless your pocket, there was no form of excitement on her face or in her voice.
I think she later gave the purse to my younger sister.
How did I feel? I am sure you can guess how I felt at the time but oh well, all of that is water under the bridge. When I recall the whole event I just laugh.
Would I be willing to go all out for her again? Absolutely, she's my mother after all plus she has done more than I can actually prepay for me over the years.
