April 1st, is that day some people wake up armed with lies, mischief, and enough acting skills to win a grammy, but then again, there are people like me, innocent, trusting and unfortunately we are the perfect target.
Lets use this years own, I and my friend..let's call her Faith, Faith and I have been hyping the week, we had very serious plans, I won't be sharing our plans with y'all🤪...well there was movies, eating out and some other things in our plans. Then, I just saw her at my doorstep, and she she dropped the bombshell...babe, I have to travel to Malete KWASU(Kwara State University), my junior just called to see me, I think its an emergency and my dad already gave permission.
I would have had some mixed feelings if she just said it, but she also performed it. She called her dad right there, the phone was on speaker and I heard her dad saying she would forward some money to her and to get prepared fast to go. I was disappointed but, of course, I had to understand, family comes first. I tried swallowing my sadness, but it wasn’t going down easily, I guess because I had been looking forward to the week and hate last minute disappointments.
I was having just little on me, so I gave her some foodstuffs to give to her bro, what are friends for, even though I had little too, I should give something. I would just be indoors mourning my loneliness, and eat whatever was left in my fridge. I went out to attend to something and came back in the afternoon, her door was not locked, well, I just went into my own room, she rarely lock her door if am around. I entered to shower and that I would help her lock when am done, after I showered, a message came in, it was her, maybe she had arrived I guess, but then, I saw....“Haha, April Fool!”
I blinked at my screen. I couldn't think of what it was at first, then it hit me, this girl had played me, she's home. She didn't just played me, she even took the foodstuffs giving me those appreciative looks and gestures, saying thank you as if....I was pained, it felt like betrayal, it felt like heartbreak...and in that pain, I made a decision and decided on my judgment.
I message her back..."you must go to that Malete, or we must not see or talk till the weekend.” And I meant it. I sent the last two thousand naira in my account to her, if its not enough, she could teleport, as far as I'm concerned, she must go to KWASU. But did she go, that’s a story for another day.
There was one I fell for years ago also, this time it was from my cousin. She called me, her voice was shaking like someone that just survived an accident. She told there's a bad news, that something bad had happened. I asked her what happened, she said she was robbed, my heart jumped off, how, where, I couldn't ask her all that, I could feel her shivering on the other end. She said a lot were taken, her laptop, and all, including her phone, my cousin is one who would rather forget her name than misplace her phone. She explained how it happened, she never paused to breathe, she's just so good at acting. I was already planning how to handle her billing, cause she would want to get another, her phone is her life.
Then, she switched, and said.... April Fool.
The silence that followed was deep, then she started laughing and I just ended the call, she should laugh alone, or what's funny in all of these.
This April fools day is weird. People lie, deceive, stress others, and then expect you to laugh it off, saying its just for fun, but is it really fun. Just look at what I had went through. I was innocent and trusting, but then I ner knew I was getting manipulated. Truly, there are times this pranks are funny, but most times, they are just plain wickedness. A friend once told her mum she was pregnant, her mother shouted, saying her daughter has disgraced her, has made her a laughing stock in the street and all, but then she said it was a prank, what if the mother was so shocked and something else had happened. Why do we derive joy from watching people suffer?
Well, I have mixed feelings about this April Fool’s Day. It’s fun to see creative pranks, but on the other hand, people don’t always know where to draw the line. Also, if April Fool’s Day was canceled, maybe the world would be a safer place for people like me, cause as it is for fun, it might endanger in some ways also. It’s still around though and I have decided to be ready next year, this time, with my own prank. I will be striking back but mine would have limit, not something too overboard.
