Improvement is essential as far as humans continue to exist in the world. Not just my town but the majority of towns in my country need better roads. One pressing thing that Nigerians suffer the most is bad roads.
It is so inconvenient that a pregnant woman who is almost due can not travel a long distance. That's just how bad the road is in different towns in Nigeria. There are lots of roads that are inaccessible during the rainy season, leaving the masses to either find alternatives or sweep through the water like that.
Living in a community where there is poor road is like living in a house without doors and windows making it dangerous to health. The same goes for using bad roads on a regular basis. Accidents are bound to happen, leaving the lives of citizens in danger. Addressing infrastructural issues is one thing that the communities can not activate as it is solely the government that can give approval to any road construction.
Using my community road as an example, there was a time when my community was a no go area, it was flooded with thick mud underneath which made it impossible for cars to pass. It was only pedestrians that could pave way by the side of the road. Cars had to leave the road completely to find another route as compounds blocked the spaces to avoid cars driving through their compounds just to have access.
When our community members gathered for something to be done, the only decision reached and the only thing we could do was to fill the road with a trip of sand. After the agreement, it was left for funds to get this sand and everyone went deaf, even the car owners living in the community refused to make a contribution to see that the road is filled. It remained so for years until an influential man who bought land and built a house used his personal money to do the needful by filling the road with strips of sand.
A change of government is one thing I don't think can change the state of roads as far as Nigeria is concerned, only a new leader that steps on the seat without a corrupt mind. Taking a step to tackling this issue requires that the government allocate resources to road projects and make sure the project is completed and evidence of completion is shown to the right officials.
Nigeria is one country where citizens don't have a voice and democratic practice is only read and not practiced. It is as bad that citizens cannot hold the government accountable for not fulfilling their duties. Some of the governmental bodies even go as far as making proposals for some community roads to be repaired and when this is granted and money is issued they begin something and take pictures as evidence that something is going on only to stop half way that could even leave the road looking worse than it was.
For easy road transportation, improving the roads in different towns would go a like way to improving quality living and enjoyment of social amenity that the citizens are entitled to
