Just off the beaten path, in the middle of Nowhere, Oklahoma, is a magical, strange, wondrous place. The locals have a variety of names for it; some call it the Rock House, or the Castle, some call it the Vortex, and some just call it that Hippy Place. Whatever name you use, it is a place you'll not forget.
Everything on the castle grounds is made by the inhabitants or their guests, frequent visitors who put time, energy, and love into the place. The majority of the statues are Portland Cement mixed with rebar, broken pottery, and other odds and ends. Lush flowers, like the hyacinths above, bloom in every corner of the garden.
One of the most striking features, and one visible from the street, is the giant hookah smoking caterpillar perched atop a mushroom. The entire statue stands at least 15 feet tall and provides ample shade for sitting beneath and reflecting. One might almost believe this is Alice's Wonderland.
The paths through the vibrant gardens are clearly marked by road signs like the one above. More than just a geographic marker, each sign has its own story. If you are lucky enough, the lady of the castle may choose to share the story with you.
One of the paths leads right to the base of the Wingnut Tree. This cement tree somehow grows over time, exposing new faces all the time. Faces are a common theme at the Vortex, with many of them peering out from shrubbery and garden borders.
Every decent castle must have a protector. Here are the local gargoyles, perpetually perched in front of one of the arched entrances to the castle's garage, a 2 story structure made of brick, mortar, and the kitchen sink!
Finally, we come to Buddha Bob. He is always ready at the gate to greet welcome guests. Every few years, he gets a new outfit. This pink robe is the hot color for the season; Buddha Bob is rocking it.
