I think the combining of same cards to level up has been discussed many times. However as the game is evolving I feel like their is a change of thought of when it is in favor to combine cards and when not to. Today I put out my opinion on why it is now more than ever before beneficial to combine cards than in the past.
Card Supply
With each new addition of cards there are more packs printed in the set. This means there are more opportunities for players to combine cards as the supply is increasing. Why the increase in card supply benefits combining cards is in two folds.
First the quantity of 1 bcx of those cards are now flooding the markets making it difficult to resell at higher $ and furthermore difficult to rent out even at 1 bcx. Simply put the supply of 1 bcx of cards are a lot higher and using the supply and demand dymanics it is understandable that currently for instance the Chaos set there is just a lot of those cards out for buy / sell.
Second is the revisions in rewards. It has been months if not a year since Splinterlands revised the way players can earn daily reward chests and rank battles. The lower the league the less rewards yield. In the past even 1bcx of cards would be sufficient to yield reasonable amount of rewards from chests to DEC tokens. Now with the new system in place for a while many players who only have 1bcx cards are earning just a tiny fraction of what could have been. This then incentivizes players to combine cards in order to increase their odds of moving up in league battles. The higher the league the bigger the rewards per a win.
Rental Markets
With higher level cards players have better odds of moving up in the leagues. One way to move up is to rent out cards. As of now the snapshot above is showing the wide discrepancy in renting out a level 1 chaos summoner versus same but at level 2. It comes out to almost three times the rental price between just a level 1 and level 2 card. Since the season is near its end the 1 bcx cards are getting slightly bid up even at rent prices.
On the other hand during the beginning to middle of the season the price of 1 bcx summoners could potentially be running at 0.1 Dec which the the lowest minimum necessary to bid a rented card.
Conclusions
Of course the main drawback of combining cards is that the cards have more of a difficult time to resell. On the other hand having higher level cards allows users to achieve a better gaming experience. It took me a while to realign my thought process when it came to combining cards and now I feel any time I get to combine cards I will do so. The higher level cards are giving better chances of winning and cards I do not play I can rent easier if their levels are higher than 1. So as of now I recommend players to combine cards where possible and when not using those higher level cards you can rent them out.
