It is widely recognized that many famous singers began their careers in church. However, any musician aspiring to achieve recognition beyond their local community must incorporate elements that enhance their skills. It’s important to understand that developing competency doesn’t happen overnight; it requires a conscious effort to invest in oneself, both financially and personally, which many find challenging.
While it's understandable that some cannot afford the financial investment, there are also those whose beliefs hinder their progress. For instance:
- "A music career shouldn't be pursued professionally because it's not feasible."
- "Musicians don't play a key role in our society."
- "You have to go through difficult times before you can succeed in the music industry."
- "Music isn't a serious field; just go to a good recording studio, and everything will turn out fine."
These misconceptions have prevented many aspiring musicians from fully committing to their craft, relegating it to a mere side hustle.
Additionally, it’s important to recognize that not everyone with a good voice is automatically a good musician or singer. Having a good voice does not necessarily mean that one will create good music.
I have often received compliments about my voice, and some people even take it upon themselves to become momentary career counselors just to suggest I pursue music as a career.
I, most times, would shrug those opinions off.
Apparently, I'm passionate about many things, including music, and it would be crazy of me to try to venture into everything.
Haven't said all these, what's now the role of competency in our music life?
Competency plays a vital role in music. It enables creativity, excellent performance delivery, and overall, a lasting, enjoyable experience on the part of the listener as the singer.
Competence in music enhances clear communication of the singer's ideas and emotions without it easily misinterpreted by others.
It enables the singer to harmonize lyrics, beats, and sound in such a way that resonates well with listeners.Music is ever-evolving, which is why competency is much needed.
Competency in music helps musicians to creatively think out of the box and learn how to make use of contemporary instrumentation that would keep them afloat even during difficult times in the music industry.
I still consider most music produced during the late 90s as a hit because the high competency they incorporated during the making of these songs made them still sound evergreen although, they're now categorized as "old school music and "classic"Also, competency in music encourages critical listening.
Music requires active listening of both the singer and the listener. It helps the singer to discern and appreciate certain nuances in music.Competency in music facilitates outstanding performance.
When you see a music expert performance, you don't need anyone
to tell you because you'll get to know them through the way they command attention and deliver a mind-blowing performance.
