It looks like cigarettes companies count the number of reasons to quit smoking cigarettes when counting the numbers of cigarettes in a pack because there are as many reasons to quit smoking just as there are many cigarettes in a pack. Quiting cigarette might look sound difficult but when you look at the number of reasons to quit, that becomes a race to finish. Cigarette has been associated with cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer, respiratory disease, and many more. You see, if we count illnesses like malaria, typhoid, and a few other diseases, the number of diseases that smoking isn’t a cause is very little.
Nicotine quitting is difficult like I mentioned at the beginning of the post l, and so people who try to wuit often don’t become successful at it but there are a lot of methods that can help people quit nicotine, and scientists are also doing a lot to make this work.
When it comes to addiction in cigarettes and vapes, we should give the credit to nicotine because it binds to dopamine receptors in the brain which gives the feel good and reward feeling and the more one smoke, the more the brain is addicted to it such that when the person tries to stop, they suffer from anxiety, trouble sleeping, increased appetite among many others which we call withdrawal symptoms.
A lot of people have tried quitting on their own, either they stop all together or they try to stop by reducing their intake gradually, but in all, it has been shown that people who try to stop smoking on a first time trial by themselves aren’t usually successful although these people are able to quit if they join support groups or have other form of social support such as text messages morivating your decision and effort being put into it, as well as coping strategies to overcome the addiction. About 25% of people have actually confirmed that they stopped smoking 90 days after trying social support.
Since nicotine is the asdictive ingredient in cigarettes, a beter option to stop smoking is taking alternatives with nicotine that isn’t smoking and one of them is nicotine gum with others being nicotine inhaler, nasal spray, and patches, and people use this in the form of replacement therapy.
Some people call e-cigarettes or vapes an alternative to cigarette but I still find it hard to believe and this is a personal thought, nothing to do with science and if science says it is an alternative, who am I? But one thing is certain, it still comes with risks such as injuring the lungs.
Away from the electric smoke that can damage your lungs while doing another suppose good, one way to quit cigarettes is using Bupropion which is an antidepressant that increases the dopamine and adrenaline levels in the brain, which helps people with cigarette withdrawals easily. Scientists are still trying to understand it but they are happy that it is doing the lord’s work.
Scientists are working on giving nicotine vaccine which will help with antibodies that attack nicotine thereby binding to it and making it too big to bind to the blood brain barrier. If nicotine isn’t reaching the brain, then oke can quit smoking. While this sounds promising in theory, clinical trials have had mixed results as participants with more antibodies where more likely to quit compared to those with lesser antibodies. Well, if adjuvants are added, then there is a chance that it would help increase the antibodies in people who get the vaccine.
