Perhaps one of the biggest challenges in our lives is dealing with people. There are those who have an easier time with relationships and others who don't. And in the midst of living together, friction and arguments arise, who hasn't argued with someone at least once in their life? The big question is: how do you avoid stupid, pointless arguments? Or how do you back down from an argument that could become a bigger problem?
I have an uncle whose way of dealing with things is quite interesting. Often, when we were out driving and something happened, for example, some driver cut him off or made a reckless maneuver, he acted as if it was the most normal thing in the world. Sometimes the other driver was completely wrong and would still try to start a fight, but my uncle would always react in an unusual way. The first few times, I thought a fight would break out. But he would get out of the car with a smile on his face, all friendly, and that was the end of any confusion.
Who acts like that? My uncle. Sometimes I was surprised, even though I knew he would sort it out in the best way. Still, it crossed my mind that a traffic fight would happen. But it didn't. When this happens, the other person is usually on the defensive, ready to justify themselves or attack with offensive words, and my uncle responds with a smile and even a friendly gesture. Often, any confusion ends right there.
And why did I tell you this story? Because it's a way my uncle found to resolve problems and arguments without wearing himself out. And he often resolved everything quickly and without further damage. Sometimes, believe it or not, he even made friends. That's his example, an example that, even if I don't follow it exactly the same way, I find admirable.
For my part, I can say that I avoid arguments. Not out of cowardice or fear of something happening, but simply because I don't have the patience for it. I'd like to be like my uncle, but the truth is that I simply don't have the patience or the cold blood that he has. Of course, sometimes it's inevitable, and arguments happen. Most of the time, I try to argue my point and understand the other person's. But if the argument doesn't go any further. But if the discussion doesn't move towards agreement or a fair sharing of ideas, I simply stop continuing. The truth is that I hate discussing anything aimlessly. It makes me feel like I'm wasting time and I hate wasting time too.
In most discussions I have, I try to be objective and understand the situation as a whole. Of course I defend my thinking, but I also try to understand the other side. Even so, I avoid it and, if I can avoid it, I always will, until the point when it's no longer possible. Perhaps that's my mistake: keeping things that upset me to myself so as not to discuss them. Sometimes I try to approach them with a dialog, but people react the wrong way and then an argument starts. So I often end up avoiding them as well.
With strangers, I avoid arguments as much as possible, especially when tempers are flaring. I keep thinking: what am I going to gain by arguing with someone who won't listen to me and who, in the end, won't change anything about the situation? It would just be two people shouting, getting nowhere. And, worse, it could end in tragedy. Who hasn't heard a story about two strangers who got into an argument and ended up in violence? So I ask myself: is it really worth it?
If it's really worth it, that's the question I ask myself when faced with any possible argument. And most of the time, the answer is no. Discussions are important, yes, as long as both sides are mature enough to listen to the other and seek common sense. Without that, arguing is just a way of venting anger. And if you want to do that aimlessly, you'd be better off playing a sport, shouting in the bathroom or even lighting up a cigarette. But wasting my time with stupid arguments? Not that. I move on.

Eu tenho um tio que forma de lidar com as coisas chega a ser interessante. Muitas vezes, quando saímos de carro e algo acontecia, por exemplo, algum motorista o fechava ou fazia uma manobra imprudente, ele agia como se aquilo fosse a coisa mais normal do mundo. Às vezes o outro condutor estava completamente errado e, mesmo assim, tentava iniciar uma briga, mas meu tio sempre reagia de forma inusitada. Das primeiras vezes, eu achava que uma briga iria acontecer. Mas ele saía do carro com um sorriso no rosto, todo simpático, e ali qualquer indício de confusão terminava.
Quem age dessa maneira? Meu tio. Às vezes eu ficava surpreso, mesmo já sabendo que ele resolveria da melhor forma. Ainda assim, passava pela minha cabeça que uma briga de trânsito aconteceria. Mas não. Quando isso acontece, a outra pessoa geralmente já chega na defensiva, pronta para se justificar ou atacar com palavras ofensivas, e meu tio responde com um sorriso e até um gesto amigável. E por que contei essa história? Porque essa é uma forma que meu tio encontrou de resolver problemas e discussões sem se desgastar. E, muitas vezes, ele resolvia tudo de forma rápida e sem maiores prejuízos. As vezes, acredite se quiser, fez até amizades. Esse é o exemplo dele, um exemplo que, mesmo que eu não siga exatamente da mesma forma, considero admirável.
Da minha parte, posso dizer que evito discussões. Não por covardia ou medo de algo acontecer, mas simplesmente porque não tenho paciência para isso. Gostaria de ser como meu tio, mas a verdade que eu simplesmente não tenho paciência o sangue frio que ele tem. Claro, às vezes é inevitável, e as discussões acontecem. Na maioria das vezes, tento argumentar meu ponto de vista e entender o da outra pessoa. Mas, se a discussão não caminha para um acordo ou para um compartilhamento justo de ideias, eu simplesmente abro mão de continuar. A verdade é que eu odeio discutir qualquer coisa sem objetivo. Isso me faz sentir que estou perdendo tempo e eu também odeio perder tempo.
Na maioria das discussões que tenho, tento ser objetivo e compreender a situação como um todo. Claro que defendo meu pensamento, mas também busco entender o outro lado. Ainda assim, evito e, se eu puder evitar, sempre vou evitar, até o ponto em que não dá mais. Talvez esse seja um erro meu: guardar coisas que me chateiam só para não discutir. Às vezes, tento abordar com um diálogo, mas as pessoas reagem de forma errada e, aí, começa uma discussão. Então, muitas vezes, acabo evitando também por isso.
Com desconhecidos, evito discussões ao máximo, principalmente quando os ânimos estão exaltados. Eu fico pensando: o que vou ganhar discutindo com alguém que não vai me ouvir e que, no fim, não mudará nada na situação? Seriam apenas duas pessoas gritando, sem chegar a lugar algum. E, pior, pode acabar em tragédia. Quem nunca ouviu uma história de dois desconhecidos que começaram uma discussão e terminou em violência? Então me pergunto: vale mesmo a pena?
Se vale realmente a pena, essa é a pergunta que me faço diante de qualquer possível discussão. E, na maioria das vezes, a resposta é não. Discussões são importantes, sim, desde que ambos os lados sejam maduros o suficiente para ouvir o outro e buscar um senso comum. Sem isso, discutir é apenas uma forma de extravasar raiva.
