The other day, I was eager to go to the mountains. I needed to do some physically demanding activity and have contact with nature, so I invited a friend, and we agreed to meet at the entrance of El Caucho.
Don’t ask me why it’s called El Caucho (or in English, it would be "The Tire"); all I know is that it’s called that, and there’s a big tire at the entrance of this community, right next to a liquor store.
El otro día estaba loca por ir a la montaña. Necesitaba hacer alguna actividad física exigente y tener contacto con la naturaleza, así que invité a un amigo y acordamos vernos en la entrada de El Caucho.
No me pregunten por qué se llama El Caucho (o en inglés sería "The Tire"), solo sé que es así y hay un Caucho grande en la entrada de esta comunidad justo al lado de una licorería.
My friend has a motorcycle, and it was funny because when I arrived at the entrance, I saw him on his motorcycle, and I laughed. The idea of going to this place was to walk up, and I said to him, "When I said we should go up to El Caucho, I didn’t mean by motorcycle, but okay." He laughed, I got on his motorcycle, and we rode for a small stretch until we found a place to park it.
We started walking—it was already late, so the weather was perfect. There wasn’t much sun, and it was ideal for climbing gradually without exhausting ourselves too much.
Mi amigo tiene moto, y fue cómico porque cuando llegué a la entrada, lo veo encima de su moto y yo me reí, porque la idea de ir a este sitio era subir caminando, y le digo "cuando te dije que subiéramos al Caucho no me refería en moto pero ok", se rió, me subí a su moto y anduvimos por un pequeño tramo hasta conseguir un sitio donde aparcarla.
Empezamos a caminar, ya era tarde así que el clima estaba perfecto, no había mucho sol y era óptimo para subir poco a poco sin agotarse tanto.
El Caucho is basically a community on a mountain, so the road and paths are mostly quite steep.
El Caucho es básicamente una comunidad en una montaña, por tanto, la carretera y los caminos son en su mayoría bastante empinados.
Something that caught my attention was that my friend left his motorcycle calmly in the shared parking area—completely open to anyone passing by—near some houses, without worrying too much about it. My Valencian instinct told me it wasn’t a good idea to leave the motorcycle there without protection other than the Holy Spirit's. However, he was confident because he had done so before, and we simply continued. He told me that El Caucho is a safe place with good people. Once again, with my Valencian instinct, I told him you can never be too sure. But as the afternoon went on and we kept climbing, I completely relaxed. The people around greeted us, lots of motorcycles passed by, and everyone seemed to mind their own business. We also came across beautiful landscapes in the community.
Algo que me llamaba la atención es que mi amigo dejó su moto con tranquilidad en el estacionamiento compartido -y totalmente abierto a cualquiera que por allí pasaba- de algunas casas, sin sopesarlo mucho. Mi instinto valenciano me decía que no era buena idea dejar la moto allí sin protección más que la del Espíritu Santo, pero él estaba confiado porque ya antes lo había hecho, y simplemente seguimos. Me contaba que El Caucho es un lugar seguro y con gente de bien. Yo, nuevamente con mi instinto valenciano, le dije que uno nunca puede confiarse. Pero a medida que pasaba la tarde y seguíamos subiendo, me relajé totalmente. La gente alrededor nos saludaba, subían muchas motos sobretodo y cada quien iba pendiente en lo suyo, y nos conseguíamos además con paisajes hermosos de la comunidad.
My friend and I were interrupted by the sound of a bell echoing through the mountain, which I thought came from a nearby chapel. When I turned around, I saw through the trees a beautiful image of a small, pink, and lovely chapel in the distance from where the bell was ringing. My friend and I wanted to visit it, but the path we were following didn’t intersect with the chapel, and we never got to see it up close. So, that’s a perfect excuse to go back.
Los cuentos de mi amigo y yo fueron interrumpidos por una campanada que retumbó en la montaña, y me parecía provenía de alguna capilla cercana. Cuando volteo, veo entre el monte a lo lejos, la preciosa imagen de una capilla pequeña, rosada y muy linda, desde donde venían las campanadas. Mi amigo y yo deseábamos pasar por allí pero el camino que seguíamos no se cruzaba con la capilla, y nunca la vimos de cerca. Así que esa es una perfecta excusa para volver.
As we kept climbing, we suddenly heard soft “llanera” music coming from one of the houses. It seemed like such a beautiful scene among the trees, flowers, and chickens that escaped from a small house to do who knows what.
Mientras seguíamos subiendo, de repente escuchamos música llanera suave proveniente de alguna casa, y me pareció una escena tan hermosa entre el monte, las flores, los árboles y las gallinas que se escapaban de alguna casita a hacer quién sabe qué.
When we finally reached our goal, "the flag," we laid down on some stones someone had placed there for anyone who wanted to rest for a while. It turns out that this spot is one of the last nearby houses up the climb in El Caucho. It’s a small blue house where a very kind family lives. They hoist a large Venezuelan flag that, thanks to the breeze there, spends most of the day waving. But that day there wasn't any flag. In fact, from my house (which is quite far from there), if I squint and focus, I can see the flag waving in the afternoons. And again, this blue home is entirely exposed—there are no fences or gates to "protect" the space, further proof that the people in this community feel safe.
Cuando por fin llegamos a nuestra meta, "la bandera", nos echamos en unas piedras que alguien puso allí para recibir a quien sea quisiera descansar un ratito.
Resulta que ese lugar de llegada es de las últimas casas cercanas que hay en la subida del Caucho. Es una casita azul donde vive una familia muy linda, y ellos izan una gran bandera de Venezuela que, con la brisa que hace ahí, se la pasa casi todo el día ondeando. Aunque ese día la bandera no estaba. De hecho, desde mi casa (que queda algo lejos desde allí), si entrecierro los ojos y me concentro, puedo ver la bandera ondear en las tardes. Y de nuevo, este hogar azul tiene todo alrededor expuesto, es decir, no hay cercas o rejas que "protejan" de alguna forma el espacio, prueba más de que la gente en esa comunidad se siente segura.
While we were there, suddenly I felt something (or someone?) climb onto my legs. I looked down, and it was a beautiful black kitten, apparently looking for a cozy spot to sleep. The bold little thing wanted to use me as a pillow and get some love. Naturally, I couldn’t resist. It seemed to belong to the house because I noticed it got along very well with the household dogs.
Mientras estábamos allí, de repente siento a algo (alguien?) subirse a mis piernas, bajo la mirada y era un precioso gatito negro, que aparentemente buscaba un sitio cómodo donde dormir. El muy confianzudo me quería usar de almohada y que le diera amor. Obviamente, no me resistí.
Parecía que pertenecía a la casa, porque me di cuenta de que se la llevaba muy bien con los perritos del hogar.
We shared stories there, stayed silent for a while, simply observing the impressive view of the Sierra Nevada and the whole city of Mérida, and just breathed peace.
Later, we started our descent before nightfall, and on the way, we smelled roasted meat. We realized it was coming from a very nice restaurant near the community entrance. So, we added one more reason to return.
Compartimos historias allí, nos quedamos en silencio un rato solo detallando la impresionante vista de la Sierra Nevada y de toda la ciudad de Mérida, y solo respiramos paz.
Al rato, bajamos antes de que anocheciera, y en el camino olimos carne asada. Nos dimos cuenta de que venía de un restaurante muy bonito cerca de la entrada a la comunidad. Así que sumamos una razón más para volver.
The loveliest part of this walk was seeing peace embodied in a little furry friend. Before leaving to return, I saw the black kitten that had stolen the stone where I had been sitting meditating. It had curled up to sleep with Mérida as its backdrop. Thus, before continuing our way, I said goodbye to him while he slept peacefully with Mérida in the background: you’re the luckiest kitten in the world.
Lo más lindo de este paseo fue ver la paz hecha un peludito, cuando antes de bajar para regresar, veo al gatito negro que se había robado la piedra donde yo estaba sentada meditando, y se acurrucó a dormir con Mérida arropándolo. Así, antes de seguir nuestro camino, me despedí de él y le dije mientras dormía en paz con Mérida de fondo: eres el gatito más afortunado del mundo.
