My spot in the second row was somewhat privileged considering it directly faced the ceremonial platform. I also occupied the first table in a group of no more than twenty or twenty-five seats, if I'm not mistaken. This included the protocol area and the four folding chairs for the jury, which was the count.
It was a good idea to arrive early at the amphitheater, as I had plenty of time to get acclimated and admire this masterful work of twentieth-century architecture.
I had my things in a backpack, which I packed beforehand in the office's safe, leaving only a blank sheet of paper on the pine table for notes.
I was waiting for the start of my art class, where the closing ceremony of the project would be held, so I focused my attention on anything else that might distract me. I admit, though, my misfortune was a chronic earache, which I experienced right from the moment I entered the amphitheater.
A low, droning buzzing sound, with no apparent cause, almost imperceptible at first, seemed fleeting and insignificant. It was like when you hear a herd of horses approaching you imminently, but then, by chance, you notice them moving away, the herd succumbing in the distance.
However, a few minutes after arriving at the auditorium and taking my privileged seat near the keynote speaker, the discomfort returned, now like a suspicious rumbling in my paranasal cavity that shattered my eardrum.
Nevertheless, I made an effort to clear my mind of all restraints, concentrating first on the antechamber.
Completely eager to know! I cast a vague glance over the empty seats in the hall. Without noticing, after a few minutes I got close enough to the footprint of the first step. So, assuming this was an act of pure chance, not some arbitrary or curious interference on my part, I stood squarely on the platform carpet, reaching for the sound rack and checking all the equipment in detail.
On the platform rested the shielded base of a microphone, a lectern with the speaker's papyri, a blank flip chart ready for use, and an acrylic whiteboard with several markers placed at the bottom, far to the left, held the upright sculpted bust of an ancient philosopher.
So, to disengage from my auditory discomfort, I took one of the notebooks and instinctively began to draw the five lines of a musical staff.
I placed the treble clef on the second line and the double vertical bar on the left, followed by the alphanumeric symbol indicating the four-beat time signature. I looked at it and saw that it was centered and the line spacing was good enough to fit the musical note figures.
I thought about eighth notes and sixteenth notes, which usually take up more space given their nomenclature, which implies the elongation of an upper bar, sometimes double, and also dotted.
I divided the board into two parts. I drew a six-stringed fretboard with twelve frets, containing the minor pentatonic scale in its five positions. From then on, I set my mind racing with that diagram, because it had everything I needed.
After several minutes of using the acrylic markers and wandering through some harmonic circles that suddenly came to mind, my earache remained the same:
_ "Damn!" I said_. "Can't even my beloved love of music bring me any relief?"_
At this point, I realized with some despair that I wouldn't necessarily have to start by putting pencil to paper. Nor would I have to listen to some well-versed lecturer's speech. Rather, I would first have to confront the symptoms of deception. As today's class demonstrated, it was a complete waste of money, with me, the teacher and the student, also the audience, in the middle of a completely empty room, staring fixedly at a sculpture of Socrates.
“I wrote the preface to my own inspiration by diagramming overlines on the staff. It turned out to be the formula for a mental melody, a transit of thirty-sixth and thirty-sixth notes, which clashed with my obtuse thinking. Uneasy, I listened to the cranial, stormy hum, followed by prolonged silences that then unleashed chromaticisms of quarter notes and half notes, with pronounced accents, which finally converged into sensitive modal changes and string jumps, which I wrote endlessly on the staff. Squeezing out, as much as possible, a wasteless intervallic note in the darkest Locrian mode.”
_ "Well, that's how I felt!"_ "That was, as never before, the coloratura of my most painful improvisation!"_
I put the acrylics aside and prepared to continue scrutinizing the rack.
I now proceeded to check the microphone's impedance.
I tapped the pad a few times with my fingertip and understood where the damn beeping noise was coming from, persistently immolating every tiny structure that makes up my ear.
_ "Yes, the microphone was open!"_ "Projecting static into the auditory labyrinth, to whom it may concern!" _
I quickly delved into the "Master" to modify the equalization somewhat to my own taste. I emphasized the mid-tone balance, since, for speaking purposes, the vocal range tends to disperse in the mid-range, seeking to bounce toward the empty edges. Because of this, those in the back seats often have difficulty understanding complete phrases.
To this end, I did a test with my own voice, modulating the power of the stylus on the console, which I kept at "fifty hertz." However, I reduced the treble level to a quarter of an amplitude to avoid the characteristic feedback and achieve a clean tone. Furthermore, I would reduce the emphasis on the endings of the "S" notes, which are so annoying to the listener.
I adjusted the bass to 40 percent, and finally the "Presence" or resonance knob, also to a quarter of a cycle, to preserve the voice's body without attenuation.
I minimally moved the "Chorus" potentiometer to the right to 3 percent, considering the vault's acoustics were favorable.
_ "Finally, my battered left ear, victim of thunderous feedback, was finally at rest!"_
_ "Who would have been in charge of this equipment before? They don't know what they have! What a waste!"_ was the least I could object to in that wasted sound mess.
Between the four walls of the amphitheater, I was alone, cheated by an unpromising lecture that would be taught, in turn, by an absent mentor.
_ "Whoever it was!", "he was taking too long to arrive, just like the rest of the delayed and unpunctual audience!" "They're wasting their time!" I thought.
"For the occasion, I had planned to act as a sponge in today's class, trying as much as possible to capture every artistic resource, which I predicted would be of great importance, especially given the optimal conditions offered for oratory in that place. In my poetic thinking, more than an art class, it would be for me the most complete presentation on musical language, which I would use to give sound to my literary texts, an evolving practice between writing and music, which would take into account everything from syllabic intonation to the exact meter in a lyrical vocal interplay."
The domed classroom maintained the essential acoustics to make my experiment feasible. I was still eager for the moment of my participation.
Constructed of polished wood panels and cork laminates, interspersed with a massive granite rock wall erected at the rear, the wall also framed the only door leading into and out of the gallery.
The chamber featured an upper box founded on four marble cornices, and higher up on the ceiling were two circular skylights, whose source provided the space with perfect sunlight, pleasantly incorporating each space. The grids also functioned as an aeration system.
Definitely a jewel evocative of natural elements, a showcase for an art department that was taking its time getting started.
Meanwhile, I, having overcome an earache that nearly pierced my brain, had also created a piece of music out of mortification, after also serving as a technical assistant in theatrical sound acoustics, yet I was still waiting in the desolate amphitheater for the finalization of my project, for the audience, the jury, and the speaker.
What a waste of time and talent! Don't you think?

Cierre de proyecto

Mi puesto en la segunda fila era un tanto privilegiado teniendo en cuenta que coincidía frontalmente con la plataforma ceremonial, además de ocupar también la primera mesa en base a un grupo no mayor a veinte o veinticinco asientos, si no me equivoco, aparte del lugar de protocolo y de las cuatro sillas plegables del jurado, más precisamente, ese, era el conteo.
Fue una buena opción llegar temprano al anfiteatro, pues me sobraba tiempo para ambientarme y contemplar aquella magistral obra arquitectónica del siglo veinte.
Yo traía mis cosas en una mochila las cuales guardé de antemano en la caja del bufete dejando sobre la tabla de pino tan solo una hoja en blanco para apuntes.
Esperaba el inicio de mi cátedra de arte donde se celebraría para la ocasión el cierre de proyecto, motivo por el cual dispuse de toda mi atención por sobre alguna otra cosa que pudiera llegar a distraerme, aunque admito, era mi infortunio una molestia crónica en el oído, la cual presenté, justo desde mi entrada al anfiteatro.
Un zumbido bofo, sin causa aparente, al principio, casi imperceptible, me pareció algo pasajero e insignificante. Algo así, como cuando escuchas una manada de caballos que se aproximan hacia ti con inminencia, pero, a modo casual, luego notas como se aleja, sucumbiendo el tropel en la lejanía.
Sin embargo, al cabo de algunos minutos de haber llegado al auditorio y ocupado mi asiento privilegiado cerca del orador de orden, volvió la molestia, ahora, como un ronroneo suspicaz en los paranasales que me hacían trizas el tímpano.
No obstante, me esforcé por vaciar mi mente de toda sujeción, concentrándome a priori en la antesala.
¡Completamente ansioso por saber!, dirigí una mirada indistinta sobre los asientos vacíos de la sala, sin notar, al cabo de pocos minutos me aproximé lo suficiente a la huella del primer escalón y así, haciéndome el supuesto de que aquello era un acto de la pura casualidad, más no, alguna arbitrariedad o curiosa intromisión de mi parte, me paré de lleno encima del tapete de la tribuna dándole mano al rack de sonido y checando al detalle todo el equipamiento.
En la tribuna descansaba la base apantallada de un micrófono, un atril con los papiros del orador, un rota folios en blanco listo para ser usado y una pizarra acrílica con varios marcadores depuestos en la parte inferior, más a la izquierda, lucía enhiesto el busto escultural de un filósofo antiguo.
Entonces, para desentenderme de mi malestar auditivo tomé uno de los anotadores y comencé a dibujar, instintivamente, las cinco líneas de un pentagrama.
Coloqué la clave Sol en segunda línea y la doble barra vertical a la izquierda seguida del alfanumérico que indica el compás de cuatro tiempos. Lo miré, vi que estaba centrado y el interlineado con buena aproximación para que cupieran las figuras de las notas musicales.
Pensé en las corcheas y las semicorcheas, las cuales por lo regular ocupan mayor espacio dado su nomenclatura que implica la elongación de una vela superior, a veces, doble, también, con puntillo.
Dividí la pizarra en dos partes. Dibujé un diapasón a seis cuerdas con doce trastes, contentivo de la escala menor pentatónica en sus cinco posiciones, de ahí en adelante, puse mi mente a volar ante aquella diagramación, pues, tenía todo lo que necesitaba.
Luego de varios minutos usando los marcadores acrílicos y divagando en algunos círculos armónicos que de improviso se me vinieron a la mente, mi dolor de oído seguía igual:
_ ¡Maldición!, dije_ ¿Es que acaso ni mi amada afición por la música puede brindarme algún alivio?_
A estas alturas, con cierta desesperación noté que necesariamente no habría yo de empezar asentando el lápiz en la página de apuntes. Tampoco escuchando el versado discurso de algún conferencista, sino, más bien, primero tendría que afrontar síntoma del embaucamiento, pues, tal como lo demostraba la clase del día de hoy, era un completo despilfarro, donde era yo, el profesor y el alumno, también el público, en medio de un salón completamente vacío siendo observado fijamente por una escultura de sócrates.
“Escribí el prefacio de mi propia inspiración diagramando sobrelíneas al pentagrama. Resultó ser la fórmula de una melodía mental, tránsito de fusas y semifusas, las cuales chocaban contra mi obtuso pensamiento. Intranquilo, escuchaba el craneal zumbido tormentoso, seguido de prolongados silencios que luego desencadenaban cromatismos de negras y blancas, con acentos remarcados, los cuales confluían finalmente en cambios modales sensibles y saltos de cuerda, que yo escribía sin parar en el pentagrama. Exprimiendo, a más no dar, una interválica sin desperdicios en el más oscuro modo Locrio”.
_ ¡Pues, así me sentía!_ _¡Esa fue, como nunca, la coloratura de mi más sufrida improvisación! _
Dejé a un lado los acrílicos y me dispuse a seguir escudriñando el rack.
Procedí ahora a comprobar la impedancia del micrófono.
Le di un par de toques a la almohadilla usando la yema del dedo y entendí de dónde provenía el maldito pitido que persistentemente inmolaba cada una de las pequeñísimas estructuras que conforman mi oído.
_ ¡Sí, el micrófono estaba abierto!_ _ ¡Proyectando la estática en el laberinto auditivo, a quien pueda interesar!_
Ahondé rápidamente en el "Master", para modificar un tanto la ecualización de acuerdo a mi propio criterio; destaqué el balance medio tonal, ya que, para fines conferencistas la tesitura vocal tiende a dispersarse en la bóveda buscando rebotar hacia los extremos vacíos, debido a esto, por lo regular quienes están ubicados en los puestos de atrás tienen dificultad para entender las frases completas.
A tal efecto, hice una prueba con mi propia voz, modulando la potencia de la aguja en la consola, la cual mantuve a “cincuenta hercios”, no así, el nivel de agudos, al cual le reduje a un cuarto de amplitud, para así evitar la retroalimentación característica y alcanzar un matiz limpio, más aun, reduciría los énfasis en la terminación de las “S”, tan molestos para el receptor.
Los graves, los ajusté a cuarenta por ciento y finalmente la perilla de “Presence” o resonancia, también a un cuarto de ciclo, para así conservar el cuerpo de la voz, sin atenuar.
Mínimamente, moví a diestra el potenciómetro del “Chorus” a tres por ciento, considerando que la acústica de la bóveda era favorable.
_ ¡Al fin, descansó mi maltratado oído izquierdo víctima de un feedback atronador!_
_ ¿Quién se habría encargado de estos equipos anteriormente? ¡No saben lo que tienen! ¡Que desperdicio!_, fue lo mínimo que pude objetar de aquel desbarajuste de sonido mal aprovechado.
Entre las cuatro paredes del anfiteatro, estaba yo solo, estafado, por una cátedra poco prometedora que sería dictada, a su vez, por un mentor ausente;
_ ¡Fuera quien fuere!_, _ ¡éste, se hacía esperar sobrado, al igual que el resto de una audiencia diferida e impuntual! _, ¡desperdician su tiempo!, pensé.
“Para la ocasión, me había propuesto actuar como una esponja en la clase de hoy, tratando en lo posible de fijar cada recurso artístico, los cuales vaticinaba de gran altura, especialmente, por las condiciones óptimas que se ofrecían para la oratoria en aquel lugar, según mi pensar poético, más que una clase de arte, sería para mí la más completa ponencia de lenguaje musical, de la cual yo me valdría para dar sonoridad a mis textos literarios, una práctica evolutiva, entre la escritura y la música, que tomaría en cuenta desde la afinación silábica hasta la exactitud de la métrica en un lírico juego vocalizado”.
El aula con forma de cúpula guardaba la acústica esencial para hacer factible mi experimento. Yo seguía ansioso por que llegara el momento de mi participación.
Construida entre paneles de madera pulimentada y laminados de corcho que intercalados se coronaban por una pared maciza de roca granitada erigida a tope en la parte ulterior, la pared, enmarcaba a su vez la única puerta para entrada y salida a la tribuna.
El hemiciclo contaba con un palco superior fundado entre cuatro cornisas marmoladas y más arriba, en el techo, yacían dos retículas circulares como tragaluz, cuya fuente mantenía aquel recinto con la iluminación solar perfecta, agradablemente incorporada a cada uno de los espacios. También las retículas funcionaban como sistema de aireación.
Definitivamente, una joya evocadora de los elementos naturales en gala de una cátedra de arte que se tomaba su tiempo en comenzar.
Entretanto yo, habiendo librado un dolor de oído que casi taladra mi cerebro, adicionalmente, hube creado una pieza musical producto de la mortificación, luego de haber fungido, también, como asistente técnico en acústica de sonido teatral, aun así, seguía esperando en el desolado anfiteatro por el cierre de mi proyecto, por el público, el jurado y el orador.
¡Todo un despilfarro de tiempo y de talento! ¿No les parece?
