El universo es bueno y piadoso algunas veces. Esta vez nos regaló la creación del streaming (sí, sé que existe desde algunos años, pero amo el drama); y como en casa nos encanta llevar la contraria y no seguimos al montón, no se contrató la plataforma famosa, sino otra. Pero, otras veces, el universo es todo lo peor que podemos imaginarnos, de eso seremos testigo al ver Better Days, un film chino basado en una novela de Jiu Yuexi: "In His Youth, In Her Beauty"; y fue dirigida por Derek Tsang. Esta presentación vino con tanta fuerza que, decir que fue nominada y ganó “algunos” premios, sería una grosería; arrasó en cientos de nominaciones durante dos años. Ya con esto último podrán darse una idea de lo buena que es. No me considero conocedora del cine chino, pero las que he visto, han logrado encantarme, derrochan perfección y emoción. Así que, a lo que vinimos.
The universe is good and merciful sometimes. This time it gifted us with the creation of streaming (yes, I know it's been around for a few years, but I love drama); and since at home we love to be contrary and don't follow the crowd, it didn't hire the famous platform, but another one. But, other times, the universe is all the worst we can imagine, that's what we will witness when watching Better Days, a Chinese film based on a novel by Jiu Yuexi: "In His Youth, In Her Beauty"; and it was directed by Derek Tsang. This presentation came so strongly that to say it was nominated and won "a few" awards would be rude; it swept hundreds of nominations over two years. That last one gives you an idea of how good it is. I don't consider myself a connoisseur of Chinese cinema, but the ones I have seen, I have managed to love, they exude perfection and emotion. So, what we came to.
¿De qué va?
El argumento es “sencillo”, pero llena de acusación y denuncia: Abuso y acoso escolar. Estamos cansados de ver películas de este estilo, pero créanme, jamás verán algo como esto. Generalizaré un poco, algunos asiáticos tienen fama de ser fríos y metódicos, algunas veces su ironía y sarcasmo es tan tajante que no sabes si contraatacar o salir corriendo; a veces el abuso o maltrato psicológico es peor que el físico. Bueno, algo parecido es lo que veremos.
What is it about?
The plot is "simple", but full of accusation and denunciation: school abuse and bullying. We are tired of seeing movies of this style, but believe me, you will never see something like this. I'll generalize a bit, some Asians are known to be cold and methodical, sometimes their irony and sarcasm is so blunt that you don't know whether to fight back or run away; sometimes the psychological abuse or mistreatment is worse than the physical. Well, something similar is what we will see.
Flashback.
Una profesora se fija en una niña, si acaso respira sumida en su asiento, y todo regresa a su mente. Toda China está a punto de paralizarse por el gaokao, el examen nacional de ingreso universitario. La presión en los estudiantes está por los cielos, tanto que una estudiante se suicida. Chen Nian fue la última persona con quien habló, así que el impacto fue grande para ella. Mostrar un poco de empatía ante el cuerpo inerte que yacía en el patio de la escuela, fue todo lo que necesitó para ser sentenciada a ser el nuevo juguete.
Flasback.
A teacher notices a girl, if she's breathing, slumped in her seat, and it all comes back to her mind. All of China is on the verge of paralysis because of the gaokao, the national university entrance exam. The pressure on students is sky-high, so much so that one student commits suicide. Chen Nian was the last person she spoke to, so the impact was great for her. Showing a little empathy for the limp body lying in the schoolyard was all it took for her to be sentenced to be the new plaything.
Mascaras.
Nada es lo que parece. Varias veces al inicio te cuestionas sobre lo que ocurre en el film, pero luego te das cuenta y te sientes peor. Ni la cara más dulce se salva aquí, como tampoco el rostro mas rudo será como creíamos. Toda la historia, o la mayor parte de ella, se basa en simples fachadas y grandes infortunios. El suicidio de la estudiante se está tratando como si fuera por la presión de los gaokao, pero Nian sabe realmente lo que pasó y dice la verdad a los profesores y policía, y eso fue lo peor que pudo hacer.
Mask.
Nothing is what it seems. Several times at the beginning you question what's going on in the film, but then you realize it and feel worse. Not even the sweetest face is saved here, nor will the toughest face be as we thought it would be. The whole story, or most of it, is based on simple facades and great misfortunes. The student's suicide is being treated as if it was because of gaokao pressure, but Nian really knows what happened and tells the truth to the teachers and police, and that was the worst thing she could do.
Solos contra el mundo.
El universo fue bueno esta vez con Nian y la hace coincidir con Bei, aunque no de la mejor forma posible. Bei es todo lo contrario de Nian, es un delincuente, ha estado en la calle desde niño, pero bajo toda esa coraza y mal genio, es tan puro y leal que hasta me resultó tierno. Esta simbiosis es común verla en muchas otras historias, pero lo que hacen ellos es único, y la forma en lo que logran transmitir tanto con tan poco, hace que todo sea perfecto y doloroso al mismo tiempo. Ver sufrir a Nian las penas de Bei, y ver el dolor y la rabia en los ojos de Bei cuando algo le pasa a Nian es… eso, único.
Alone against the world.
The universe was good this time with Nian and matches her with Bei, though not in the best possible way. Bei is the opposite of Nian, he's a delinquent, he's been on the streets since he was a kid, but underneath all that armor and bad temper, he's so pure and loyal that I even found him tender. This symbiosis is common to see in many other stories, but what they do is unique, and the way they manage to transmit so much with so little, makes everything perfect and painful at the same time. Watching Nian suffer Bei's sorrows, and seeing the pain and anger in Bei's eyes when something happens to Nian is... that, unique.
"Te seguiré de cerca".
Mientras Nian trata de concentrarse todo lo que pueda para aprobar los gaokao, Bei se convierte en su sombra, la protege de los abusadores tanto como puede, y al mismo tiempo, tiene que protegerse a sí mismo de sus jefes y la policía. Ella tiene que salir adelante por los dos y algún día caminar en público sin vergüenza, esa es la esperanza de él. Pero el azar jugó de las suyas. La muerte de una de las abusadoras, los hace principales sospechosos, pero sin pruebas, y ante la negativa de ambos, solo logran ponerle un cargo menor a Bei por delinquir.
"I will follow you closely."
While Nian tries to concentrate as much as she can to pass the gaokao, Bei becomes her shadow, protects her from the bullies as much as she can, and at the same time, has to protect herself from her bosses and the police. She has to get ahead for both of them and someday walk in public without shame, that is his hope. But chance played its part. The death of one of the abusers, makes them prime suspects, but without evidence, and the refusal of both, only manage to put a lesser charge to Bei for delinquency.
Pasan muchas cosas a la vez, no quisiera arruinar la curiosidad que pude haber despertado. Realmente es una excelente historia, excelentes actuaciones, quedé enamorada de Nian y Bei, el desarrollo final es espectacular. Ver cada faceta de la ignorancia frente a casos de acoso y abuso, lo poco manejado que resulta; ver la actuación de la policía en estos casos. Entre todas las cosas malas, ¡que son muchas!, cada tanto se ve un poco de humanidad y sensibilidad. También recalcan mucho lo que afecta psicológicamente sufrir acoso, en algún momento Nian dice que “suicidarse no es de débiles, ella es la débil por no tener la fuerza para hacerlo”, hasta ese punto llegaba lo que podía sentir. A lo largo de toda la historia hay mensajes así de fuertes que de dejan sintiendo ese frío en la espalda que a nadie le gusta. Y por si aun tienen dudas, sí, me encantó, se ha vuelto una de mis favoritas. Así que como siempre les digo: "Si no la han viso, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene perdida de nada."
Many things happen at the same time, I don't want to ruin the curiosity that I could have awakened. It really is an excellent story, excellent performances, I fell in love with Nian and Bei, the final development is spectacular. Seeing every facet of ignorance in the face of harassment and abuse cases, how poorly handled it is; seeing the performance of the police in these cases. Among all the bad things, which are many, every now and then you see a bit of humanity and sensitivity. At one point Nian says that "committing suicide is not for the weak, she is the weak one for not having the strength to do it", that's the extent of what she could feel. Throughout the story there are strong messages that leave you feeling that coldness in your back that nobody likes. And in case you still have any doubts, yes, I loved it, it has become one of my favorites. So as I always say: If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have seen it, see it again, you can't miss it.
