That saying is perfect for this movie. I've commented several times that I'm not a fan of watching movies on TV, but these days, they were showing one, but it was already ending, so I looked it up the next day. I've also said that I'm not much of a sci-fi fan, but I'm realizing that it's a guilty pleasure that I need to embrace once and for all. Splice is a sci-fi thriller directed by Vincenzo Natali, where it mixes a bit of morbidity with a lot of trial and error and, perhaps, that's what I loved.
Ese dicho queda perfecto para esta película. He comentado varias veces que no soy fan de ver películas en la televisión, pero en estos días, estaban pasando una, pero ya estaba terminando, así que la busqué al día siguiente. También he dicho que no soy muy fan de la ciencia ficción, pero ya me estoy dando cuenta de que es un gusto culposo que debo aceptar de una vez por todas. Splice (o Experimento Mortal, por su traducción al latino) es un thriller de ciencia ficción dirigido por Vincenzo Natali, donde se mezcla un poco el morbo con mucho ensayo y error y, quizás, eso fue lo que me encantó.
Argument.
The story is simple: a couple of scientists who let an experiment go too far just to fulfill their selfish pride. It's really no big deal if we put it that way, but it's about looking beyond, seeing how much you could dare to challenge science and life itself.

La historia es simple: una pareja de científicos que dejaron llevar muy lejos un experimento solo para llenar su orgullo egoísta. Realmente no es la gran cosa si lo ponemos así, pero se trata de ver más allá, ver qué tanto podrías atreverte de retar a la ciencia y a la vida misma.
A memorable future.
As I mentioned, Clive and Elsa are renowned scientists (geneticists, actually), and they seek to find some sort of organism or gene that will improve the human condition. Among so many tests, they manage to create an organism that could work very well, and the company they work for approves it so they can do everything necessary. But Elsa wants more than a simple approval, she wants to take her discoveries to where no one had dared: to create a hybrid with human DNA.
Un futuro memorable.
Como les mencioné, Clive y Elsa son unos reconocidos científicos (genetistas, en realidad), y buscan encontrar una especie de organismo o gen que logre mejorar la condición humana. Entre tantas pruebas, logran crear un organismo que podría funcionar muy bien, la empresa para quienes trabajan lo aprueban para que hagan todo lo necesario. Pero Elsa quiere más que una simple aprobación, quiere llevar sus descubrimientos a donde nadie se había atrevido: crear un hibrido con ADN humano.
An accelerated decline.
Clive doesn't agree with what Elsa wants to do, he knows they could cancel them, not to mention get into legal trouble. Elsa tries to persuade him, but "the experiment" went so fast that it barely gave them a moment to process everything they had created. That amorphous hybrid was slowly taking shape (or rather mutating) and at the same time, Elsa was seeing it as if it were her own daughter (yes, she had already "created" a gender for it).
Un acelerado declive.
Clive no está de acuerdo con lo que Elsa quiere hacer, sabe que los podrían cancelar, sin hablar de lo que se podrían meter en problemas legales. Elsa intenta persuadirlo, pero “el experimento” se desarrolló tan rápido que apenas y les dio un momento para poder procesar todo lo que habían creado. Ese hibrido amorfo poco a poco iba tomando forma (más bien mutando) y al mismo tiempo, Elsa lo iba viendo como si fuese su propia hija (sí, ya le había “creado” un género).
How many scientists does it take to hatch an egg?
It seems hilarious that being such intelligent people, knowing all the chaos they could cause, neither of them could have known how bad they were and the chaos that was to come. The company already had their eyes on them and yet they decided to continue. Clive always wanted to put a stop to the experiment, but Elsa was already owner and mistress of "Dren", the name she gave to her little aberrated creation. This is where the morbidity of the plot comes into play.

Parece hilarante que siendo personas tan inteligentes, conocedoras de todo el caos que pudieran ocasionar, ninguno de los dos pudo saber lo mal que estaban y el caos que estaría por venir. Ya la empresa tenía sus ojos encima de ellos y aun así, decidieron continuar. Clive siempre quiso darle un alto al experimento, pero Elsa ya era dueña y señora de "Dren", nombre que le puso a su pequeña y aberrada creación. Aquí entra en juego el morbo de la trama.
From little ball of flesh to a girl.
Our couple had mixed as many genes as possible for their creation, that's why every time time time passed, Dren was changing her appearance, even they themselves were surprised by her complex genetic and physical structure. Strangely, Dren was becoming a somewhat... one could say aesthetically good-looking specimen, and Clive was noticing that. With human DNA, it's only logical for the "girl" to have some girly attitudes, so little by little she's forming that somewhat naive and flirtatious personality, just like a girl reaching puberty. The point is that Dren was getting "interested in the carnal acts" that her creators do, as she watches with total curiosity.
De pequeña bola de carne a una chica.
Nuestra pareja habían mezclado tantos genes como les fue posible para su creación, por eso cada vez que transcurría el tiempo, Dren iba cambiando su aspecto, hasta ellos mismos se sorprendían de su compleja estructura genética y física. Extrañamente, Dren se estaba convirtiendo en un espécimen algo… se podría decir que estéticamente bien parecida, y eso lo estaba notando Clive. Con ADN humano, es lógico que la “chica” tenga algunas actitudes de chica, así que poco a poco se va formando esa personalidad un tanto ingenua y coqueta, tal como una niña llegando a su pubertad. El punto es que Dren se estaba “interesando por los actos carnales” que hacen sus creadores, ya que ella ve con total curiosidad.
Like mother, like daughter.
The company was getting suspicious of Clive and Elsa, so before they were found out, they took Dren to an old farmhouse where Elsa used to live with her mother. Here we see how Elsa's mental stability is decaying faster; she starts to completely treat Dren as her own daughter. This brings more problems between them, making Elsa remember how she was treated by her mother, it is almost as if Elsa is trying to replicate her youth in Dren. In between these fights, Elsa leaves Dren grounded and Clive tries to calm the waters a bit, he knows Dren is very sensitive so he tries to comfort her, until... well, the obvious happens. We also learn why Elsa is so intent on keeping Dren alive, she really is his daughter, he used his own egg and DNA to create her.
De tal palo, tal astilla.
La empresa estaba sospechando de Clive y Elsa, así que antes de que los descubrieran, se llevaron a Dren a una vieja granja donde solía vivir Elsa con su madre. Aquí vemos como la estabilidad mental de Elsa va decayendo más rápido; empieza a tratar por completo a Dren como su fuera su propia hija. Esto trae más problemas entre ellas, haciéndole recordar a Elsa cómo era tratada por su madre, es casi como si Elsa tratara de replicar su juventud en Dren. Entre estas peleas, Elsa deja castigada a Dren y Clive trata de calmar un poco las aguas, sabe que Dren es muy sensible así que trata de confortarla, hasta que… bueno, pasa lo obvio. También nos enteramos por qué tanto empeño de Elsa por mantener a Dren viva, realmente es su hija, utilizó su propio óvulo y su ADN para crearla.
Trial and error.
By this point, the company knew what these scientists were up to and they get their location thanks to Clive's brother (who already knew everything). By the time they are on their way, things on the farm take a turn for the worse, Dren gets sick and dies (apparently), but then more things happen that, truth be told, it gets very strange and the ending is even stranger.
Ensayo y error.
Ya en este punto, la empresa sabía lo que estos científicos estaban tramando y dan con su ubicación gracias al hermano de Clive (que ya sabía todo). Para cuando ellos van en camino, las cosas en la granja empeoran, Dren se enferma y muere (aparentemente), pero luego suceden más cosas que, la verdad, se torna muy extraño y el final es aún más extraño.
Splice is a bit of a bizarre film, although it has that "I don't know what" that manages to hook a bit. And to be even more honest, the characters are very flat, the hybrid they wanted to create (Dren) is more interesting for the morbidity than for the story itself. This is still something that could easily open a debate on genetics, that is, if there was a way to improve the human condition, Would we be prepared for what was to come, even knowing the consequences?, Would these experiments be in full swing by now? And by the way, how sick do you have to be in your mind to sleep with a humanoid? That's crazy. I know it's a movie, but reality often trumps fiction. This could easily be a film to watch one of those nights when you can't get to sleep and are looking for something to entertain you or, why not? to fall asleep in the process; so if you ask me, I will answer as always: "If you haven't seen it, watch it, and if you have, watch it again, you can't lose anything".
Splice es un film un poco bizarro, aunque tiene ese “no sé qué” que logra enganchar un poco. Y siendo aún más sincera, los personajes son muy planos, llama más la atención el híbrido que quisieron crear (Dren) más por el morbo que por la historia en sí. Esto no deja de ser algo que podría abrir fácilmente un debate sobre genética, es decir, si existiera una forma de mejorar la condición humana ¿Estaríamos preparados para lo que se vendría, aun sabiendo las consecuencias?, ¿Ya estarían en pleno desarrollo estos experimentos?, y de paso ¿Qué tan enferma hay que tener la mente para acostarte con un humanoide? Eso es de locos. Sé que es película, pero muchas veces la realidad supera a la ficción. Este podría ser fácil un film para ver una de esas noches en que no puedes conciliar el sueño y buscas algo con qué entretenerte o, ¿Por qué no? para quedarte dormido en el proceso; así que si me preguntan, les responderé como siempre: “Si no la han visto, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene pérdida de nada”.
