For lovers of good drama with some comedy, the kind that can be felt in the gut and at the end leaves you with infinite nostalgia, I bring you this wonderful work. Untouchables comes to us from "la France" and is directed by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano, although this story is based on real events, which makes it even more special. Raw, direct, full of emotions of all kinds, sarcasm and ironies, but above all, a lot of learning; but beware, it is not just any overcoming movie we may have seen.
Para los amantes del buen drama con algo de comedia, de ese que se puede sentir en las entrañas y al final te deja con infinita nostalgia, le traigo esta maravillosa obra. Amigos Intocables (por su traducción al latino) nos llega desde “la Francia” y está dirigida por Olivier Nakache y Éric Toledano, aunque esta historia está basada en hechos reales, lo que lo hace aún más especial. Cruda, directa, llena de emociones de todo tipo, sarcasmo e ironías, pero sobre todo, mucho aprendizaje; pero ojo, no es cualquier película de superación que tal vez hayamos visto.
The story.
The two protagonists are complete opposites. On the one hand, Driss is a Senegalese immigrant, lives in a poor neighborhood of Paris, has a criminal record, smokes weed, but deep down he is a very sensitive young man who cares about his family. And on the other side, totally opposite is Philippe, a multimillionaire older man, and although he rubs shoulders with "la crème de la crème", he's super drab; which is understandable, the guy is a quadriplegic. This pair needs one as much as the other, Driss needs money for his family, and Philippe needs someone to take care of him.
La historia.
Los dos protagonistas son totalmente opuestos. Por un lado, Driss es inmigrante senegalés, vive en un barrio pobre de Paris, tiene prontuario, fuma hierba, pero en el fondo es un joven muy sensible que se preocupa por su familia. Y del otro lado, totalmente opuesto está, Philippe, un multimillonario hombre mayor, y aunque se codea con “la crème de la crème”, es súper monótono; lo cual es entendible, el tipo es tetrapléjico. Este par necesita tanto de uno como del otro, Driss necesita dinero para su familia, y Philippe a alguien que lo cuide.

We find ourselves running in a chase, friends gambling on not getting caught by the police, and... surprise, surprise, they come out on top. This, like many other scenes are very significant throughout the film, this one in particular, gives us a taste of what this pair will be able to do.

Nos encontramos corriendo en una persecución, unos amigos apostando por no ser atrapados por la policía, y… sorpresa, salen victoriosos. Esta, como muchas otras escenas son muy significativas a lo largo de todo el film, ésta en específico, nos da un abreboca a lo que este par será capaz de hacer.
Not easy.
Now from the very beginning. Driss, like every unemployed young man, is just looking for an excuse to be able to collect money given by the government to the unemployed, so he goes to interview with Philippe firmly believing that he would reject him immediately. Amidst much sarcasm and words like darts, Driss is surprised to learn that he is hired for the job, so all the inexperience in the world, he enters that rigorous world of care.
Nada fácil.
Ahora desde el verdadero inicio. Driss, como todo joven desempleado, solo busca una excusa para poder cobrar dinero que da el gobierno a los desempleados, así que va a entrevistarse con Philippe creyendo firmemente que lo rechazaría de inmediato. Entre mucho sarcasmo y palabras como dardos, Driss se sorprende al saber que es contratado para el trabajo, así que toda la inexperiencia del mundo, éste entra en ese riguroso mundo del cuidado.
No mercy.
It is only a short time before it becomes known that Driss is not an entirely upright boy and that he has bad habits, but this does not matter to Philippe. Everything he needed was placed in that young man, he was fed up with caregivers who pitied and pitied him; with Driss everything was totally different, he was inexperienced but very capable, his black and sarcastic humor made Philippe forget for an instant that he was condemned to a chair. Without realizing it, they were both teaching each other those things that even though they seem difficult, make everything look simpler.
Sin piedad.
Pasa poco tiempo para que se sepa que Driss no es un chico del todo recto y que tiene malas mañas, pero esto no le importa a Philippe. Todo lo que necesitaba estaba puesto en ese joven, estaba harto de los cuidadores que le tuvieran lástima y compasión; con Driss todo era totalmente distinto, era inexperto pero muy capaz, su humor negro y sarcástico hacía olvidar por instante a Philippe que estaba condenado a una silla. Sin darse cuenta, ambos se estaban enseñando esas cosas que a pesar de que parecen difíciles, hacen ver todo más simple.
"If the woman is ugly, she must have a very ugly mind".
Philippe tells us a little about his ex-wife: beautiful, tall, elegant, but with an illness that prevented her from having children, which is why they decide to adopt. We are not told directly what happened to her, but it is understood that she died, and along with her, Philippe's will to live. In an attempt to want to feel alive again, he goes paragliding and that is where he has his tragic accident. After his wife, he has had no further contact with any woman, beyond his physical condition, he prevents himself from doing so for fear of rejection. Instead, he has a sort of relationship by letters with a woman he does not know, they have never met and yet they remain faithful to their extensive letters. Anyway, Driss never misses an opportunity to remind him that he may be writing to a horrible, obese or handicapped woman, she even forces him to call her; she never notices his words and it drives everyone crazy, and sometimes silently, Philippe loves it.
“Si la mujer es fea, será de una mente muy fea”
Philippe nos cuenta un poco sobre su exesposa: bella, alta, elegante, pero con una enfermedad que le impedía tener hijos, razón por la cual deciden adoptar. No nos dicen directamente qué fue lo que le pasó a ella, pero se entiende que murió, y junto con ella, las ganas de vivir de Philippe. En un intento de querer volver a sentirse vivo, hace parapente y es donde tiene su trágico accidente. Después de su esposa, no ha tenido más contacto con ninguna mujer, más allá de su condición física, él mismo se lo impide por miedo al rechazo. En cambio, tiene una especie de relación por cartas con una mujer a la que no conoce, jamás se han visto y aun así, siguen fieles a sus extensas cartas. De todas formas, Driss no pierde la oportunidad de recordarle que puede estarse escribiendo con una mujer horrible, obesa o discapacitada, hasta lo obliga a llamarla; nunca se da cuenta de sus palabras y eso enloquece a todo el mundo, y a veces en silencio, le encanta a Philippe.
The art of feeling.
Philippe, being of high birth, is very cultured, he knows how to appreciate the many forms of art, especially music and painting. These are insignificant things for Driss, who cannot distinguish one piece of music from another; but when it comes to painting, he manages to discover himself, he believes he can do better than anyone who draws a couple of red lines on a canvas. Once again, we see how each complements the other.
El arte de sentir.
Philippe al ser de la alta alcurnia, es muy culto, sabe apreciar las muchas formas del arte, en especial la música y la pintura. Cosas insignificantes para Driss, que no logra distinguir entre una pieza musical de otra; pero en cuanto al pintura, logra descubrirse, cree que puede hacerlo mejor que cualquiera que haga un par de líneas rojas en un lienzo. Una vez más, vemos cómo cada uno complementa al otro.
It is not a farewell...
As life happens, Driss finds himself needing to be with his family and Philippe understands, he lets him go. After falling into a deep depression, Driss comes back into his life, this time not as his caregiver, but as his friend.
No es una despedida…
Por cosas de la vida, Driss se ve en la necesidad de estar con su familia y Philippe lo entiende, lo deja ir. Luego de caer en una profunda depresión, Driss regresa de nuevo a su vida, esta vez no como su cuidador, sino como su amigo.
This pair proves that you don't need to have similar tastes, appreciations and behaviors to create a strong and beautiful friendship. Driss always showed Philippe his funny and sarcastic side not from mockery and belittling, but as a reminder that he was still alive and enjoying himself to the fullest, he also taught him to be a father, to see what others around him couldn't see; and at the same time he showed Driss that he can appreciate life differently, help others and not just do things to be accepted.
Este par demuestra que no hace falta tener gustos, apreciaciones y comportamientos similares para crear una fuerte y hermosa amistad. Driss siempre mostraba a Philippe su lado gracioso y sarcástico no desde la burla y el menosprecio, sino como recordatorio de que él aún seguía con vida y disfrutar al máximo, también le enseñó a ser padre, a ver lo que los demás en su entorno no podían ver; y al mismo tiempo él le mostraba a Driss que puede apreciar la vida de otro modo, ayudar a los demás y no solo hacer las cosas para que lo aceptaran.
Beyond all the drama and the message itself, the story and the film has many parts in which we can laugh without feeling guilty that it is a "handicapped", because that is really his situation, it can not be changed but you can take advantage of it and all the positive to that condition. What is politically incorrect, becomes correct. It took Philippe a short time to understand that, without the need to tell him directly, they both knew they had a strong friendship, without selfish interests or that hypocritical pity that many people feel before any other person with any condition.
Más allá de todo el drama y el mensaje en sí, la historia y el film tiene muchísimas partes en la que podemos carcajearnos sin sentirnos culpables de que se trate de un “minusválido”, porque realmente esa es su situación, no se puede cambiar pero sí se le puede sacar provecho y todo lo positivo a esa condición. Lo políticamente incorrecto, se vuelve correcto. A Philippe eso le tomó poco tiempo entenderlo, sin necesidad de decirle directamente, ambos sabían que tenían una fuerte amistad, sin intereses egoístas ni esa lástima hipócrita que muchas personas siente ante cualquier otra que tenga alguna condición.
Like many movies and stories, I can watch this one many times and still feel a thousand things again, so take your time and as I always tell you: "If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have already seen it, see it again, you can't lose anything".
Como muchas películas e historias, esta puedo verla muchas veces y seguir sintiendo mil cosas otra vez, así que tómense un tiempo y como siempre les digo: “Si no la han visto, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene pérdida de nada”.
