I promised myself not to fall into the nets of anime films again, in which I know perfectly well that I will end up with mixed feelings, but I can't fool myself anymore, I love them. From me, another standing ovation to Makoto Shinkai for creating Suzume, for me a work of art, both visually and for the plot. Even though the critics were strongly divided between it being a story that fell behind the shadows of Your Name (2016) and other spectacular films of his authorship, or that it was the plot that settled him almost on par with the Ghibli Group (which is already saying too much). Now, if you ask me, I don't think it surpasses Your Name, but it is a great story that earned a big space in my heart.
Me prometí no caer de nuevo en las redes de los films de animes, en los que sé perfectamente que terminaré con los sentimientos revueltos, pero no puedo seguirme engañando, los amo. De mi parte, otra ovación de pie a Makoto Shinkai por crear a Suzume, para mí una obra de arte, tanto visual como por la trama. A pesar de que la crítica estuvo fuertemente dividida entre que fue una historia que se quedó tras las sombras de Your Name (2016) y otros films espectaculares de su autoría, o que fue la trama que lo asentó casi a la par del Grupo Ghibli (que ya es decir demasiado). Ahora, si me preguntan, no creo que supere a Your Name, pero sí es una gran historia que se ganó un gran espacio en mi corazón.
I fell in love with several details in the film, and they share several references to the most famous stories created by Makoto, especially from Your Name, highlighting among them the landscapes, how they handle the theme of destiny, the accessories used by Suzume and the natural accidents. These last two opened debate among fans, since it can be presumed that the main event of Your Name (a meteorite falling in the village), may be “sequence” of the beginning of this new story, since Suzume lives in a very similar place where years before a tragedy happened and, although they really explain what happened in this new story, you can not help but find that similarity (and others) between both animations.
Quedé enamorada de varios detalles dentro del film, y es que comparten varias referencias de las historias más famosas creadas por Makoto, sobre todo de Your Name, resaltando entre ellos los paisajes, cómo manejan el tema del destino, los accesorios que usaba Suzume y los accidentes naturales. Estos dos últimos abrió debate entre los fanáticos, ya que se puede presumir que el evento principal de Your Name (que cayera un meteorito en el pueblo), puede ser “secuencia” del inicio de esta nueva historia, ya que Suzume vive en un lugar muy parecido en donde años anteriores pasó una tragedia y, aunque expliquen realmente qué fue lo que sucedió en esta nueva historia, no se puede evitar encontrar esa similitud (y otras) entre ambas animaciones.
Well, the story follows Suzume, a teenage girl who is captivated the first time she sees a boy, Souta, who asks her for help in finding a door. As strange as that question was to her, it didn't stop Suzume from going after Souta without knowing what she would find. There is a “legend” in Japan in which there are some kind of portals (a door left after a catastrophe) that, when open, can unleash natural disasters, so Souta has the task of traveling from time to time through the islands of the country in search of these doors to close them before the worst happens. The spectacular thing about this, is that after an unexpected event with Souta and “a guardian god” (this blessed God, broke my heart as many times as he wanted and as he pleased), Suzume ends up being in charge of closing these doors giving the opportunity for her to see what she herself is capable of doing and to realize something extremely important about a memory of her childhood.
Bien, la historia sigue a Suzume, una adolescente que queda cautivada la primera vez que ve a un chico, Souta, quien le pide ayuda para encontrar una puerta. A pesar de lo extraño que le resultó esa pregunta, no evitó que Suzume fuera tras Souta sin saber lo que se encontraría. Hay una “leyenda” en Japón en la que existen especies de portales (alguna puerta que haya quedado luego de alguna catástrofe) que, al estar abiertos, pueden desatar desastres naturales, así que Souta tiene la labor de ir viajando cada tanto por las islas del país en busca de estas puertas para cerrarlas antes de que pase lo peor. Lo espectacular de esto, es que luego de un evento inesperado con Souta y “un dios guardián” (este bendito Dios, me partió el corazón todas las veces que quiso y como le dio la gana), Suzume termina encargándose de cerrar estas puertas dando la oportunidad de que ella misma vea lo que es capaz de hacer y darse cuenta de algo sumamente importante sobre un recuerdo de su infancia.
As this adventure progresses, we can see the great change that Suzume meant for Souta, since, at the beginning, he is cold and distant with her; but “thanks to a God”, he has no choice but to open up little by little with her. All of this turns out to be positive for him both in his work as a protector and in his internal quest to prove to himself that he is worth more than his family believes and, along the way, also to find a little redemption.
On the other hand, Suzume manages to understand that, behind her impetus and independent character, she carries a big emotional baggage due to an event “in the beyond” and the loss of her mother that does not let her develop as she would really like to. Since losing her mother, her aunt is her only family and obviously becomes her only mother figure. Moving away from home and into this new work unconsciously opens wounds from the past which she will have to heal if she wants to help the world and Souta.
Mientras va avanzando esta aventura, se puede ver el gran cambio que significó Suzume para Souta, ya que, al inicio, es frio y distante con ella; pero “gracias a un Dios”, no le queda más opción que abrirse poco a poco con ella. Todo esto, resulta positivo para él tanto en su labor como protector, como en su búsqueda interna por demostrarse que vale más de lo que su familia cree y, en el camino, también encontrar un poco de redención.
Por otro lado, Suzume logra entender que, tras su ímpetu y carácter independiente, carga una gran maleta emocional por un evento “en el más allá” y la pérdida de su madre que no la deja desarrollarse como ella realmente quisiera. Desde que perdió a su madre, su tía es su única familia y, obviamente se convierte en su única figura materna. El alejarse de casa y adentrarse en esta nueva labor, inconscientemente abre heridas del pasado las cuales tendrá que sanar si quiere ayudar al mundo y a Souta.
Throughout the story we can see the complexity of this relationship. On the one hand, both find trust in each other, surrendering to their destiny and emotions; Suzume learns many things from Souta, and he accepts his reality and understands that you can't always run away from pain. Obviously, all this is a great symbolism about the personal development, growth and search for redemption of both of them.
A lo largo de la historia podemos ver la complejidad de esta relación. Por una parte, ambos encuentran confianza entre ellos, entregándose a su destino y emociones; Suzume aprendes muchas cosas de Souta, y él acepta su realidad y entiende que no siempre se puede huir del dolor. Obvio, todo esto es un gran simbolismo sobre el desarrollo personal, crecimiento y búsqueda de redención de ambos.
Now, throughout the story, we will find several details or elements that represent metaphors. The first, of course: the doors as an element of suffering or pain. From Suzume's first interaction with one of the doors, the first “worm” is unleashed (the one that causes natural disasters), which we can understand as “unresolved issues” or vestiges of the past that are traumatic. Therefore, she is able to see “the beyond” (the dimension of the deceased), and it is also not mere chance that she ends up being in charge of closing the other doors. Looking at Souta's side, everything that happened to him and the complications of being able to do his only job well, was simply for him to learn that taking the blame of others is not good and that it is okay to take care of one's own problems alone. As a second element we have the theme of grief. We continue to appreciate Suzume's visions, both in dreams and every time she sees an open door that, besides representing what I already mentioned, we can also observe that, if these matters are not taken care of, the catastrophe will be worse (just as it happens every time they find a new door). The closing of the doors and the way of doing it, is for Suzume a clear message of how to overcome the death of her mother and how to deal with her grief. And, last but not least: growth. As I already mentioned, the development of Souta and Suzume is very marked, even though they both had their personalities well marked, facing that adventure together made them understand their realities and deal with their fears and insecurities, it opens a new way for them to continue facing life.
Ahora bien, a lo largo de la historia, nos vamos a encontrar con varios detalles o elementos que representar metáforas. La primera, claro: las puertas como elemento de sufrimiento o dolor. De la primera interacción de Suzume y una de las puertas, resulta que se desate el primer “gusano” (el que causa los desastres naturales), lo que podemos entender como “asuntos no resueltos” o vestigios del pasado que resultan traumáticos. Por eso, ella es capaz de ver “el más allá” (la dimensión de los fallecidos), y tampoco es mera casualidad que ella termine por encargarse de cerrar las demás puertas. Viendo el lado de Souta, todo lo que le sucedió y las complicaciones de poder hacer bien su único trabajo, era simplemente para que aprendiera que cargar con culpas de los demás no es bueno y que está bien encargase solo de los problemas propios. Como segundo elemento tenemos el tema del duelo. Seguimos apreciando las visiones de Suzume, tanto en sueños como cada vez que ve alguna puerta abierta que, además de representar lo que ya les comenté, también podemos observar que, si no se atienen esos asuntos, la catástrofe será peor (justo como pasa cada vez que encuentran alguna puerta nueva). El cerrar las puertas y la forma de hacerlo, es para Suzume un mensaje claro de cómo superar la muerte de su madre y cómo lidiar con su dolor. Y, por último, pero no menos importante: el crecimiento. Ya lo comenté, el desarrollo de Souta y Suzume está muy marcado, a pesar de que ambos tenían sus personalidades bien marcadas, el enfrentar esa aventura juntos les hizo entender sus realidades y lidiar con sus miedo e inseguridades, les abre una nueva manera de seguir enfrentando la vida.
As we can see, Suzume's messages, beyond love and the strength of destiny, are clearly about resilience and overcoming. We can see the two facets represented: facing and healing the pain caused by some event in our lives, and escaping while hiding all the pain we have accumulated over time. That Souta needed Suzume to close the doors and accept many aspects of his life is fascinating; just as Suzume needed Souta to learn to face his past, he can also be an example that in order to overcome and grow, it is necessary to face that which hurts so much. Souta said it well: “sometimes to move forward, you have to stop” and Suzume had to come face to face with that pain in order to move forward. With this relationship we also see the clear example of support and accompaniment so that both could achieve their goals, although (from my point of view) with a bit of emotional dependence.
Como vemos, los mensajes de Suzume, más allá del amor y la fuerza del destino, son claramente de resiliencia y superación. Podemos ver las dos facetas representadas: enfrentar y sanar el dolor que nos causa algún evento de nuestras vidas, y escapar mientras ocultamos todo el dolor que hemos ido acumulando durante el tiempo. El que Souta necesitara a Suzume para cerrar las puertas y aceptar muchos aspectos de su vida, es fascinante; al igual que Suzume necesitó a Souta para aprender a enfrentar su pasado, también puede ser ejemplo de que para superar y crecer es necesario afrontar eso que tanto duele. Bien lo decía Souta: “a veces para avanzar, tienes que detenerte” y Suzume tuvo que ponerse cara a cara con ese dolor para poder avanzar. Con esta relación también vemos el claro ejemplo de apoyo y acompañamiento para que ambos pudiesen cumplir sus objetivos, aunque (desde mi punto de vista) con un poco de dependencia emocional.
Now, if we talk about the visual part, in short, it's wonderful, I loved it. Makoto continued to give us majestic landscapes of Japan and great detail down to the smallest pixel, with a style very similar to Your Name (can't beat the similarities, sorry). At the same time, it managed to convey so many emotions in the landscapes of destroyed places, being able to perfectly separate the real world from that other dimension full of nostalgia and pain for not being able to return to life, I really found it very beautiful. The combination of colors to be able to differentiate these planes was a great success. I think that any detail I try to describe will fall short of what this film really is. The director gave us another masterpiece full of symbolism and messages for life that are fascinating. When watching it, just remember that, perhaps, you will leave with thousands of mixed emotions and probably end up in tears; so as I always say: “If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have already seen it, see it again, you can't lose anything”.
Ahora, si hablamos de la parte visual, en resumen, es maravillosa, la amé. Makoto continuó dándonos paisajes majestuosos de Japón y gran detalle hasta en el más pequeño pixel, con un estilo muy parecido al de Your Name (no puede superar las similitudes, lo siento). Al mismo tiempo, logró transmitir tantas emociones en los paisajes de lugares destruidos, pudiendo separar perfectamente el mundo real de esa otra dimensión llena de nostalgia y dolor por no poder regresar a la vida, realmente me resultó muy hermoso. La combinación de colores para poder diferenciar estos planos fue un gran acierto. Creo que cualquier detalle que intente describirles quedará corto para lo que realmente es este film. El director nos regaló otra obra maestra llena de simbolismo y mensajes para la vida que resultan fascinantes. Al verla, solo recuerden que, quizás, vayan a salir con miles de emociones mezcladas y probablemente terminen hechos un mar de lágrimas; así que como siempre les digo: “Si no la han visto, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene pérdida de nada”.
