Health is an integral part of human life because without good health, there’s not much one can do. And this is where healthcare comes in. Everyone needs to have a healthcare provider and this is one of the basic things every individual must have. This is because we need to constantly check on our health by visiting the hospital for regular checkups and reviews.
However, when we look at the situation in most cases, most people don’t even have access to quality healthcare because the system is not working. Taking Ghana, my country for example, healthcare is just not what it’s supposed to be on a normal day. The system has been rigged so much such that the average citizen cannot even afford to go to the hospital. At the end of the day, most spiel resort to just buying drugs from local pharmacies to get rid of their symptoms.
The health sector is in shambles on various levels. Imagine going to the hospital for care only for the nurses in charge to be insulting you and treating you anyhow. That’s just one aspect. The conditions on the hospitals are not even one to write home about. And then there’s the issue of doctors with their own clinics referring you to their clinics when you go to a general hospital. You get the trick right.
Speaking of strikes, there’s always an ongoing strike in my country because everyone wants this a that and they want the government to listen. But I personally believe that change starts with us. About a month ago, workers at a teaching hospital around here had to go on a strike because the health minister allegedly had a fight with the CEO of the hospital which led to the workers being angry. And this was all because someone related to the minister died at the hospital and a whole lot. At the end of the day, the CEO had to be transferred because the health workers decided not to work until the minister apologizes to their CEO.
If you ask me, that’s not what really matter here. What matters is the our government does what it’s supposed to do and the health workers also hold their end of the bargain. We need to let go do the mentality of treating patients anyhow because these are the lives of people we are dealing with. I believe that the whole health sector needs to be reviewed and built from scratch to ensure quality of services being rendered.
