Hola querido hiver.
El Principado de Andorra tiene una corta variedad de actividades económicas, lo que no impide que sea un territorio fructífero. Por un lado, se considera como paraíso fiscal y atrae las fortunas de los países cercanos que desean evadir impuestos en sus lugares de origen; por otro, su situación en pleno corazón de los Pirineos lo convierte en un destino perfecto para los amantes de los deportes de nieve; por último, su régimen fiscal ha favorecido el intercambio de bienes comerciales desde hace décadas aunque, como te cuento a lo largo de esta publicación, los productos han variado sustancialmente.
Las fotografías que comparto fueron tomadas en un par de mañanas en las que recorrimos la calle comercial principal. Sin abandonarla pasamos de Escaldes-Engordany al norte a Andorra la Vella, capital del principado, que queda al sur. De este modo bajamos una cuesta poco empinada salvo en el principio del recorrido.
En la parte superior se puede ver la famosa cúpula del balneario-spa Caldea. Es un balneario gigante en el que se puede disfrutar de las beneficiosas aguas de estas montañas.
Uno de los negocios tradicionales andorranos es el cultivo y venta de tabaco. La sustancial diferencia de precios respecto a las mismas marcas en Francia y España ha hecho que durante décadas muchos hayan viajado hasta allí para comprarlo y hacer sus pequeños negocios. Lo mismo ocurría con el alcohol, quesos, chocolates, café, azúcar… hasta el punto de que existe un límite de cantidades sin declarar que se pueden sacar del país para evitar el contrabando. Hace años sí merecía la pena, pero ahora la verdad es que no tanto. Solo si ya vas a ir allí de todos modos puedes picar en algún capricho.
Se hace extraño ver publicidad de marcas de tabaco por todas partes, algo que en el resto de la Unión Europea está prohibido. Por suerte para mí, desde hace dos años y medio no necesito entrar a ningún establecimiento como ese, jeje.
Con los años las tiendas dedicadas a esos productos han mutado poco a poco a tiendas dirigidas al lujo, con el objetivo directo a las billeteras de los adinerados que hacen turismo por allí. A veces te sientes como Julia Roberts en su personaje de Pretty Woman por Rodeo Drive…
Los bolsillos más estrechos disponemos de centros comerciales con algo más de alcance, aunque ya te advierto que como no sea en época de rebajas tampoco son asequibles, salvo el supermercado.
La calle comercial es peatonal en su mayor parte. La última vez que estuvimos estaban sustituyendo el asfaltado del suelo por enlosado. En él había un camino de teclas que estaban cada vez más juntas, hasta que descubrías que era un reclamo con motivo de la celebración de un festival de jazz. Fue imposible no acordarme de @mipiano… 😁
Otro de los locales que llevan más tiempo con sus puertas abiertas, en este caso dirigido a la venta de bebidas alcohólicas.
Al cruzar esta calle entramos en Andorra la Vella. En épocas de gran afluencia de turistas se hace difícil esquivar a los que vienen de frente. Esto también noté que ha cambiado, cuando estuvimos había menos gente que en años anteriores.
La parte más estrecha y con mayor concentración de tiendas de la calle suelen adornarla para dar un ambiente festivo y alegre. Y lo consiguen, vaya que sí. Es llegar a ese tramo y las miradas cambian, asoman sonrisas a los rostros y tanto da mirar hacia el suelo como hacia el cielo, lo ves todo de colores.
En una calle paralela también era obligado estirar el cuello para ver el brillo de esas rosas. Al parecer formaban parte de una instalación artística.
Otro negocio que crece en Andorra es el inmobiliario. Había edificios en construcción y en remodelación por todos lados. Como sigan así no tardarán mucho en ocupar el escaso terreno disponible. En la misma línea que en otros lugares turísticos, las viviendas tienen unos precios desorbitados… Aquí tienes lo más caro y lo más “barato” del escaparate… ¡una plaza de garaje que cuesta más que el coche!
Esta imagen es icónica del país. Es su banco más conocido, el Mora Banc, que por supuesto, ocupa un lugar destacado de la calle comercial.
La última parte peatonal se abre hasta formar una plaza sobre el río Valira. Este es un punto destacado para los amantes de los selfies, ¡había que esperar turno para hacerse uno en el mejor puesto!
En su lugar preferí fotografiar esta escultura. No todos los días se tiene el privilegio de estar frente a una obra de Salvador Dalí. Su título es La Noblesse du temps (La Nobleza del tiempo).
Pasando a la otra orilla del río alcanzamos el último tramo de la calle. Al pasar coches y tener aceras no muy anchas ha perdido locales comerciales, el ambiente de compras se diluye.
Si hasta ahora no has encontrado nada a tu gusto o al de tu bolsillo siempre te queda Aliexpress. 😁 (Spoiler: tampoco compré nada allí)
Si te gusta ir de tiendas, esta calle es un paraíso. Aunque solo la recorras para mirar es una experiencia que recomiendo si pasas por Andorra.

The Principality of Andorra has a short range of economic activities, which does not prevent it from being a fruitful territory. On the one hand, it is considered a tax haven and attracts fortunes from nearby countries that wish to avoid taxes in their places of origin; on the other hand, its location in the heart of the Pyrenees makes it a perfect destination for snow sports enthusiasts; finally, its tax regime has favoured the exchange of commercial goods for decades, although, as I will tell you throughout this publication, the products have varied substantially.
The photographs I am sharing were taken on a couple of mornings when we walked along the main shopping street. Without leaving it, we went from Escaldes-Engordany to the north to Andorra la Vella, the capital of the principality, which lies to the south. In this way we descend a gentle slope except at the beginning of the route.
At the top you can see the famous dome of the Caldea spa. It is a giant spa where you can enjoy the beneficial waters of these mountains.
One of the traditional Andorran businesses is the cultivation and sale of tobacco. The substantial difference in price compared to the same brands in France and Spain has meant that for decades many have travelled there to buy tobacco and run their small businesses. The same was true of alcohol, cheese, chocolates, coffee, sugar... to the point that there is a limit on the undeclared quantities that can be taken out of the country to avoid smuggling. Years ago it was worth it, but now it's not so much. Only if you're already going there anyway can you nibble on a treat.
It's strange to see advertising for tobacco brands everywhere, something that is forbidden in the rest of the European Union. Luckily for me, for the last two and a half years I don't need to go into any establishment like that, hehe.
Over the years the shops dedicated to these products have gradually mutated into luxury shops, aiming directly at the wallets of the wealthy tourists. Sometimes you feel like Julia Roberts in her Pretty Woman character on Rodeo Drive...
For those of us with tighter pockets, there are shopping centres with a little more scope, although I warn you that unless it's during the sales season, they are not affordable either, except for the supermarket.
The shopping street is mostly pedestrianised. The last time we were there they were replacing the asphalt floor with paving. On it there was a path of keys that were getting closer and closer together, until you discovered that it was an advertisement for a jazz festival. It was impossible not to be reminded of @mipiano... 😁
Another one of the places that have been open for the longest time, in this case for the sale of alcoholic beverages.
Crossing this street we enter Andorra la Vella. In times of high tourist traffic it is difficult to avoid those coming from the front. I also noticed that this has changed, when we were there there were fewer people than in previous years.
The narrowest part of the street with the highest concentration of shops is usually decorated to give it a festive and cheerful atmosphere. And they succeed, they really do. When you reach this stretch of the street, looks change, smiles appear on the faces and whether you look towards the ground or towards the sky, you can see everything in colour.
In a parallel street, you had to crane your neck to see the brightness of the roses. Apparently they were part of an art installation.
Another growing business in Andorra is real estate. There were buildings under construction and under renovation everywhere. If they carry on like this, it won't be long before the scarce available land is taken up. In the same line as in other tourist places, housing prices are exorbitant... Here you have the most expensive and the ‘cheapest’ in the shop window... a parking space that costs more than the car!
This image is iconic of the country. It is its best known bank, the Mora Banc, which of course, occupies a prominent place in the shopping street.
The last pedestrianised part opens out into a square overlooking the river Valira. This is a highlight for selfie lovers. You had to wait your turn to take a selfie in the best spot!
Instead I preferred to photograph this sculpture. It's not every day that you have the privilege of standing in front of a work by Salvador Dalí. Its title is La Noblesse du temps (The Nobility of Time).
Passing to the other side of the river we reach the last stretch of the street. As cars pass by and the pavements are not very wide, it has lost its commercial premises, and the shopping atmosphere is diluted.
If you haven't found anything to your taste or your pocket, there's always Aliexpress. 😁 (Spoiler: I didn't buy anything there either)
If you like shopping, this street is paradise. Even if you're just browsing, it's an experience I highly recommend if you're in Andorra.
