Lately I’ve been thinking about technology and its changes, specially since a student from the school I work at overheard me telling a friend about how when I was a teenager I got lost because I took the wrong bus, and the student who must be at most 8 years old, told me: miss if you got lost why didn’t you use your phone? It’s easy… well he’s right, it’s easy nowadays to find yourself and your destination in a cellphone app, but it wasn’t that easy in 1998.

Back then, I had barely touched a computer but I was learning how to use one, I remember I wanted to be able to use a computer ever since I watched Jurassic Park at the cinema… weird isn’t it? A movie about dinosaurs made me think that the use of a computer would be useful… but yeah, it happened because of the scene where the kids are trying to lock the doors and it’s all computerized, so the girl said something about she knowing how to use that system and was able to lock the doors and saving the group from the dangerous velociraptors, ever since I watched that in 1993 when I was 9 years old I wanted to be able to some day be able to use a computer because who knows when that skill would come in handy.

I never thought that not only computers would be of common use but also there would be lots of gadgets. If I’d go back in time and tell my 9 year old self that not only I would learn how to use a computer but also I’ll use it daily at work creating digital illustrations along with a tablet that lets me draw with a digital pen while I play whichever song I’d like on my phone and controlling the volume or skipping songs with the help of my watch and when I’m at home I can talk to a speaker and ask my virtual assistant Alexa to turn on my lights and TV where I talk to my remote control to ask for a movie play on a streaming platform… certainly my 9 year old self would think I’m kidding and just messing with her.

I’ve become somewhat dependent on technology, I can’t even recall when my opinion changed from being a little afraid of it thinking a computer would blow up if I pressed the wrong button to rely on it for almost everything, from little things to ask if it’s going to rain to more important issues such as paying every bill or make doctor appointments.

Other thing I’m used to now is how fast it is, and I can’t help but laugh when I hear a kid complaining that the video he/she wants to see is taking more than 3 seconds to load… if only they’d knew that not long ago it would take hours to load a video until you could finally watch it, or that we had to wait hours, or even days for songs to get downloaded and if someone dared to pick up the phone all our downloads were lost.

I have to say, I’m glad I got to live through the change and that I was able to see how it all improved, I feel I’m involved with technology and even though I’m dependent on it, I know how it was living without it, it wasn’t the prehistory but it’s definitely very different from what it was when I was a kid. It comes to mind every teacher in elementary school saying: “when you grow up you won’t be carrying your calculator everywhere, so you’d better learn the multiplication tables” and I learned them because I truly believed I wouldn’t be with a calculator at hand whenever I needed it, and not only a calculator but a map so I won’t get lost again as I got years ago because of that incorrect bus.

He vivido la evolución digital y la amo

Últimamente he estado pensando sobre la tecnología y sus cambios, especialmente desde que un estudiante de la escuela donde trabajo me escuchó contarle a una amiga sobre como cuando era adolescente me perdí porque me subí al camión equivocado, y el estudiante que debe tener a lo mucho 8 años, me dijo: miss, si se perdió ¿por qué no usó su teléfono? es fácil... bueno, tiene razón, es fácil en estos días encontrarte a tí mismo y tu destino en una aplicación de celular, pero no era así de sencillo en 1998.

En ese entonces, apenas si había tocado una computadora pero estaba aprendiendo a como usarla, recuerdo que quería ser capaz de usar una desde que vi Parque Jurásico en el cine... extraño ¿no es así? una película sobre dinosaurios me hizo pensar que usar una computadora llegaría a ser útil... pero sí, sucedió por la escena donde los niños están tratando de cerrar las puertas y todo está computarizado, así que la niña dice algo sobre saber como usar ese sistema y pudo cerrar las puertas y salvar al grupo de los peligrosos velocirraptores, desde que vi eso en 1993 cuando tenía 9 años quería ser capaz de algún día poder usar una computadora porque quien sabe cuando esa habilidad podría ser útil.

Nunca pensé que no solo las computadoras serían de uso cotidiano sino que habría varios dispositivos, si volviera en el tiempo y le dijera a mi yo de 9 años que no solo aprenderá a usar una computadora pero también la usará a diario en el trabajo para crear ilustraciones digitales junto con una tablet que me permite dibujar con un lápiz digital mientras pongo la canción que quiera en mi teléfono y controlo el volumen o salto a la que sigue con la ayuda de mi reloj y que cuando estoy en casa puedo hablar a una bocina y pedirle a mi asistente virtual Alexa que encienda mis luces y la TV en la cual hablo a mi control remoto para pedirle poner una película en una plataforma de streaming... ciertamente la yo de 9 años creería que estoy bromeando y solo jugando con ella.

Me he hecho un tanto dependiente de la tecnología, ni siquiera recuerdo en qué momento mi opinión cambió de tenerle un poco de miedo por pensar que una computadora me explotaría si presiono el botón equivocado a confiar en ella para casi todo, desde las pequeñas cosas como preguntar si va a llover a cosas más importantes como pagar cada recibo o hacer citas con el doctor.

Otra cosa a la que estoy acostumbrada ahora es a su velocidad, y no puedo evitar reír cuando escucho a un niño quejarse de que el video que quiere ver está tardando más de 3 segundos para cargar... si solo supieran que no hace mucho tomaba horas cargar un video para finalmente poder verlo, o que teníamos que esperar horas, o incluso días para que las canciones se descargaran y si alguien se atrevía a descolgar el teléfono todas nuestras descargas se perdían.

Debo decir que me alegro de haber vivido a través del cambio y que pude ver como todo mejoró, siento que estoy inmersa con la tecnología y aunque soy dependiente de ella, sé como era vivir sin ella, no era la prehistoria pero definitivamente es muy diferente de como era cuando era niña. Me viene a la mente cada profesor de primaria diciendo: "cuando crezcan no estarán cargando su calculadora a todas partes, así que mejor aprendan las tablas de multiplicar" y las aprendí porque en verdad creía que no andaría con una calculadora a la mano para cuando necesitara, y no solo una calculadora sino un mapa y así ya no me perderé otra vez como me pasó años atrás por tomar ese camión equivocado.
