Helping Children to Understand what Speech Sounds are?
Hello gorgeous mothers, and teachers. So, excited to share this wonderful topic in this great community.
Early this morning, I was doing my assignment on Speech Sounds, waveforms, and Spectrograms. It's been long I have not posted here, but while reading along, this topic; “Helping Children to Understand what Speech Sounds are” came, and I put it on a book. When I was through with my morning lectures, I decided to brainstorm again. More insight was revealed, and I picked up my phone to type it down.
Helping Children at school or at home to understand the different speech sounds are very essential because it will help them to speak eloquently and get to understand what others are saying.
Children, will be able to understand how sounds are physically produced and transmitted from speaker to hearer.
What are speech sounds?
Speech Sounds are the vocal sounds or symbols that are used to make up of words, phrases, and larger unit which we used for communication.
Speech Sounds are sounds we use to express ourselves by uttering the right sounds in other for people to understand what we are saying.
Same with children. There are choice of sounds we used with them in other for them to understand and interpret.
Sounding right with children will help them to speak right as well. It can be beneficial in their speech development.
Teaching children speech sounds can be very complex or complicated.
These are tips that will help you support your children with speech development
1. Face your children when talking to them. Doing this will the help the child to see the shape of your mouth and imitate easily.
2. Slow down your speech sounds so that they can understand different sounds uttered.
3 Engaged them in conversations, ask them questions, let them respond appropriately. This will help them, quickly, in identifying the appropriate sounds.
4 Play sound games, that will then focus on the initial word. Game, like eye-spy.
5. Teaching them how to pronounce letters of the alphabet correctly.
6. Seeing children's movies or reading children's books that have to do with speech sounds development.
As a young person who is engaging in speech sounds. My learning won't be the same as that of the children.
So, it is important to note that children develop at different rates.
Here are some stages children start developing Speech Sounds
0-6 Months:
Children at this stage, especially babies, starts to make cooing sounds, such as “ah” and “ooh” sounds. This happens when they start making eye contact with their mothers.6-12 Months:
At this stage, children start babbling sounds, such as “mama” and "dada”. They will start repeating common words. I could vividly recall, when my nephew reached this stage, he started calling my mother, 'grandma' the way it sounds, so we all laughed. It was a kind of amusement.1-2 Years:
At this stage, children be able to pronounce consonant and vowel sounds in the English language.
- 5-6 Years:
Children should be able to articulate sounds, even though they will sign of immaturity in their articulation.
This topic came as a result of reading and doing of assignments preparing for my upcoming examination.
I believe, with these points of mine, it will help you as a teacher and parents to help your children develop speech sounds.
