Hello everyone. Welcome to my space and welcome to the beautiful month of November.
It is finally getting to that time of the year again when we get to enjoy the holidays and prepare for a new year again. I love holidays and I know there is hardly anybody that would not be excited for a holiday.
Speaking of holidays, I am not really sure how most holidays are created and suddenly become something observed either all over the world or in just a certain community or country but I thought hard about it. If I had the opportunity to create a holiday of my own what would I want?
It seemed like all the great holidays had been created already but then I thought of something. A holiday I feel is really needed and important…I guess.
If I could invent a holiday that must be celebrated, it would be a holiday all over the world that would be dedicated to disconnecting from and staying off of digital devices and spending more time, reconnecting with people, nature and ourselves. I would call it “Reconnect Day” or "Humankind Day".
Celebrated once a year, this holiday would have everyone step away from screens for the whole day, and spend more time with family, friends, and investing time in doing other things, other than being on screens or devices all day long.
Devices are needed and useful of course, it is what a lot of people make a living through but at the same time, people have become so addicted to this technology that it is almost as if no one can do without them. This is the reason I think a holiday like this is needed.
The day could start with a "Community Breakfast," where neighbors gather to share food and stories. Later, families and friends could go outside for activities like nature walks, park picnics, or beach days, with towns hosting events like scavenger hunts, craft workshops, and maybe some other fun games. For those who want quiet time, libraries or community centers could offer special spaces for reading, meditation, or art.
As the sun sets, everyone could gather around bonfires or candle-lit spaces for storytelling and live music. The day would end with a "Silent Moment," where everyone, in their own way, reflects or meditates quietly for just a few minutes.
I feel like a day like this is really needed as a global holiday because phones and other digital devices have sort of taken over our everyday life in this day and age and so people hardly put time apart to get together and spend time without these things.
Even though people still do get togethers, most of the time there is one thing or the other from their phones dragging their attention away in the end. Some don't even think they can do without these things, even for an hour. So, I feel like at least, a day that requires everyone to not use a digital device is needed. That way, people of this day and age can still realize that there is more to life than digital technology.
Reconnect Day would be a day when nature and the age of less technology is remembered and appreciated. It would serve as a yearly reminder of the power of face-to-face connection, taking a breath, and celebrating our bonds with others and the natural world.
I also chose the name ‘Humankind Day’ because it captures the spirit of reconnecting with both our humanity and kindness towards one another.
