Fish is an important part of our daily lives. It is not only a part of our diet but also known as a nutritious ingredient. The importance of fish is immense in terms of economic, cultural, environmental and biodiversity. Fish is a popular food in many countries of the world including Bangladesh. This proverb, Bengali fish and rice, is a cultural symbol for Bengalis.
There are about 34 thousand species of fish in the world. Of which about 500 species of fish are found in Bangladesh. The fish generally depend on the type of water. Such as freshwater fish, Rui, Katla, Tengra, Pabda, Shing, Magur, etc. Saltwater fish Hilsa, Shrimp, Rupchanda, Laitta, etc. Farmed fish Tilapia, Pangasius, Silvercarp, etc. Wild fish Koi, Boal, Gajar, Ir, etc.Fish is a very nutritious food. It contains a lot of vitamins A, D, protein, calcium, iron, phosphorus, and fatty acids. Regular consumption of fish reduces the risk of heart disease, improves memory, improves eyesight, makes skin and hair healthy, and strengthens bones.
Bangladesh is a fish producing country. Bangladesh earns a lot of economic currency every year by cultivating fish. Currently, modern methods are being used in fish farming. Many unemployed youth are now becoming self-reliant by cultivating fish in ponds, enclosures, cages and reservoirs. Hundreds of families in Bangladesh are involved in fish farming. Fishermen catch fish in rivers, haors, estuaries and seas with boats and nets.
Due to excessive unplanned fishing, encroachment and pollution of rivers, plastic waste, and climate change, natural fish species are under threat today. Many fish are now on the verge of extinction. Therefore, we need to create awareness to protect the natural reproduction of fish and sustain fish resources.
Bangladesh is a potential country in fish export. Bangladesh earns foreign exchange by exporting different types of fish every year. In addition to fish conservation, we should cultivate fish in the right way.
