What would a ledger user who also has an account on Hive possibly want? Right, a ledger support for Hive, a ledger app for Hive.
Does this app already exist? Yes and no, but we will get to that in a moment. First of all I would like to talk about the following:
Some Ledger users are very specific. They almost exclusively manage crypto currencies that they can store on their Ledger. Why? Because they don't want to lose their values otherwise. Be it because of their own scatteredness, ignorance, convenience aspects or very high security requirements and a possibly high investment behind it.
Who are these people? Well, this is certainly not true for everyone but for some; people who have dealt with the topic of crypto currencies at least as intensively as they have understood the importance of correct storage and thus securing their assets. A group that could be very interesting for a platform like Hive.
So we go one question further; should we try to give this group an incentive to invest in Hive and the economy around Hive?
Yes, definitely!
So how do you do this? You get in touch with Ledger and work out the basics for an app as outlined above, which will ultimately allow you to safely store your coins on the hardware wallet. A great idea on my part? Not at all. An obvious thought, which has already come up with some people on this platform.
Why don't we see if there are already discussions on this topic?
Yes there are, we find mainly the following links:
@netuoso/hive-application-for-the-ledger-nano-s-x-hardware-wallet
@netuoso/do-you-know-c-familiar-with-bolos-read-on
I would like to briefly summarize these two posts for you:
Netuoso has already developed such an app. It is funded by the Hive Pool for Development, open source and can be found on the following github:
https://github.com/netuoso/ledger-app-hive/releases/tag/v1.0.0
In the second post we now find a request for a code review, which is a prerequisite for a listing of the app by Ledger. The dilemma? Due to a (probably relevant) debate about the distribution of coins in the dev pool, a dispute has started and Netuoso seems to have stopped the project (and its activity on this platform).
(Screen from his Github activity - Note: There is no activity.)
You can check his Hive over here: @netuoso/wallet
He is pulling out money, so I guess he won't be there for any future development.
So this brings me to my real questions:
- Client of this code and therefore of the APP is HIVE, do I see this right? Since the development was financed from the Dev-Pool.
- Given that Netuoso has abandoned this project - shouldn't it be in our interest to have this app independently verified so that we can offer a direct benefit to the group of ledger users mentioned above?
- Would it be possible to perform a code review based on the source code? Couldn't this work be paid for independently of the final reviewer from the dev pool? Maybe skilled users like @blocktrades can show initiative here and build up a kind of intermediary to a corresponding reviewer?
This is a topic I came across when setting up my new Nano X and which I find very relevant. I would be very happy if I could answer my previously mentioned questions.
Together for a Hive Ledger app
P.S. If you know someone who could do a code review or could by chance help to find someone -> Feel free to link them in the comments.
