A couple times a month I like to dive into my side hustle of buying old LEGOs and flipping them for a profit. It's been a couple of weeks and today felt like a fun day to go over some of the items I've been working on. I don't currently have any big sets that I'm working through, although I do have one set that had no instructions, so I've been procrastinating work on it as it. It will involve using online instructions which are a royal pain because they're always a little fuzzy, just enough to give you a headache.
Before we dive into the current projects I've been working on, I like to share one interesting and expensive LEGO item you could potentially buy as an investment. Or alternatively, find one at a garage sale or thrift store and make some serious cash. This item it is a Spiderman that was designed with the outfit from the PlayStation 4 game.

This LEGO Spiderman figure was produced for Comic-Con 2019 and only 1,500 were made. I have never attended a Comic-Con so that might explain why I don't have one of these. And just being there doesn't guarantee you would have gotten one, only a few select lucky people win a raffle to get one of these rare mini-figures. Admission tickets to Comic-Con are well over $1,000 these days, plus you have to pay for parking and driving there. Not for me thank you. I'm sure some of you here may be huge fans of Comic-Con, so if you are there make sure you check out the LEGO raffles!
Right now you could expect to pay $1,249 for one of these tiny pieces of plastic. What I found fascinating though, was the chart associated with the character's price. Three years ago it was $600, then by July of 2023 it was at $1,600, and now down to an average of $1,249. I guess the moral of the story is that if you really want one you had best shop around because you might find a motivated seller!
Personally, I wouldn't invest that kind of money into an LEGO. I would much buy a nice gold coin or a chunk of Bitcoin. Now if I managed to pick one up for $600 and I could turn around and flip in for double my money that would be a no brainer, but I've never been quite that lucky as of yet.
Now it's time for some Ninjago fun! Ninjago is a line of LEGOs that also featured it own cartoon TV show. I'm not sure if they still make these or not, I really don't follow the new LEGO trends as much as I did when my son was collecting them. This one today is actually kind of a cool set. It came with the bone fashioned motorcycle along with the blue ninja Jay and the skeleton motorcycle rider Chopov, who comes with an axe with a copper head attacked to a large bone. And as a final touch the motorcycle has flames coming out the back. Pretty cool set overall!

And a close up of the two mini-figures with their weapons, and I used my Frankenstein background build to showcase them up close and personal. A few months back I built this background out of light tan pieces and it's easier to highlight most mini-figures.
This set sold in less that a few hours for just about $20. It came from an older bin I haven't cleaned out yet, but I've already made a profit out of it so this is pure gravy!

Next up is a set from LEGO Chima which was a short lived TV show and rather short run of production of the sets as well. They never sold all that well and the show wasn't all that popular. Unfortunately, that means there are less collectors of the sets, which is a shame because they put some nice detailing into the figures.
This set is a game. First up you see what it comes with, the build along with game cards and a fly wheel vehicle with a rip cord to pull to get the wheel spinning.

As you can see here, there is a jump ramp and a target that you are supposed to hit with the fly wheel vehicle to score points.
You insert to rip cord, and pull it out quickly and the heavy flywheel carries your mini-figure up the ramp and through the air to hopefully hit the target.
If you hit the target a snake like mouth opens and a little blue ball goes flying out. You have scored a point, at least I suppose. I never actually bothered to read the instructions because If I were to play with it I would likely break it making it unsellable! lol
And a close up of the skunk mini-figure Skinnet, why does the skunk have a whip? I have absolutely no idea...
But there you have it, a LEGO game involving a fly wheel vehicle that is supposed to fly through the air. What kid wouldn't love that toy? We shall see how well it sells, I'll ask around $15 to be competitive. Chima just doesn't bring in a lot of sales. This came out of the same bin with the motorcycle set from above, so when it sells it's also pure profit which is always a good thing!
Now for some pitfalls to avoid when buying LEGOs. These all came out of the same bin as above. These skeleton legs have cracks and not longer stay put on the mini-figures. Options are to sell them for parts or buy replacements parts to sell them. I haven't decided on these guys yet...
Now this mini-figure just plain sucked. First you can see a huge crack on it's side.
Then if you look closely at his neck a and face he has a crack all the up, not to mention the missing hand!
The the other side has a massive crack in the torso.
The only this thing is good for is parts, the legs and the hand. Again he came out the bin with the other two sets from above so it's not complete loss. Always keep your eyes open and carefully look at any mini-figures before you buy. Missing hands or cracks makes them almost worthless. Always look for intact mini-figures and complete or near complete sets with instructions. If the box is there that's a premium too. There's always risk when buying LEGOs, but if you're careful and check prices on things before you buy you can make some easy money!
