The air becomes cold, the weak light of some candles illuminates a picture of a huge room, you begin to question yourself first of all why you decided to enter this abandoned mansion... all because of that absurd legend of vampires in the town... A shiver runs through your body as you approach to observe carefully the painting, you recognize that it resembles the character of those legends, until for a few seconds you could swear that the figure of the painting looks back at you smiling showing you some sharp fangs ... you blink repeatedly and the painting is ... as if nothing had happened.... was it your imagination?

Hello everyone ! C: we meet again after a few long months~ join me in this step by step of what turned out to be an animation inspired by the older castlevania games.

If you know me or have read my posts you know how much I love doing illustrations with a fantasy theme, from nymphs, fairies, to demons.

This illustration started out as a character design with a victorian era vibe, example attached:

Hola a todos ! C: nos vemos una vez mas despues de unos largos meses~ acompáñame en este paso a paso de lo que resulto siendo una animación inspirada en los juegos mas viejos de castlevania.
Si me conoces o has leído mis posts sabes lo mucho que me mola hacer ilustraciones con una temática fantasiosa, desde ninfas, hadas, hasta demonios.
Esta ilustración comenzó siendo el diseño de un personaje con vibras de la época victoriana, adjunto ejemplo:

long-sleeved dresses, high collars, and the general mood: dark tones.
Well, what context would i give to the character?
after much meditation I thought about vampires, they have eternal life don't they? they keep that aura of mystery around them, their stories and just like in castlevania we meet those vampires with costumes of that victorian age I thought it would be a good idea to give it a modern touch.
I was inspired to make the dress similar to a very beautiful one I bought recently with an opening in the chest to show off the bust (you want to see it? that will be for another post so stay tuned ;3), and so little by little I was composing, along this illustration I change shapes and colors until I got the desired result. As always it was not easy no character creation is easy, we can take inspiration from some things but in the end the creation is yours how it interacts with the elements you decide to add in the work...

Bien y que contexto le daria al personaje?
despues de mucho meditar pensé en los vampiros, ellos tienen vida eterna no? guardan aquella aura de misterio alrededor de ellos, sus historias y asi como en castlevania nosotros nos encontramos con aquellos vampiros con vestimentas de la epoca pensé que seria buena idea darle un toque moderno.
Sin más me inspire en hacer el vestido similar a uno muy hermoso que compre recientemente con una abertura en el pecho para lucir el busto (quieres verlo? ya sera para otro post asi que estate atento ;3), y así poco a poco fui componiendo, a lo largo de esta ilustración cambio formas y colores hasta obtener el resultado deseado. como siempre no fue fácil ninguna creación de personajes es fácil, podemos tomar inspiración de algunas cosas pero al fin y al cabo la creación es tuya el como interactúa con los elementos que decides añadir en la obra...

The sketch:

oh god, the most complicated part of the whole process is the sketch, the base of what you want to do, get out of your head the shapes and silhouettes of what you want to project, in this process I always see the work of other artists and how they do whatever it is that seems difficult to me, hair, nose, neck whatever, observing is the best tool of an artist, you don't know how to do something? observe in real life the behavior of this object, or body, most of the development of a good illustration is based on observation in being detailed with the little things, the ability to simplify complex shapes etc etc.

that's why in this case when I do my sketches I follow basic principles for the anatomical structure, and even if it's not perfect it works inside my head to start working on it.

ay dios, la parte mas complicada de todo el proceso es el boceto, la base de lo que quieres hacer, sacar de tu cabeza las formas y siluetas de lo que quieres proyectar, en este proceso siempre veo el trabajo de otros artistas y el como hacen lo que sea que a mi me parezca dificil, el cabello la nariz, el cuello lo que sea, observar es la mejor herramienta de un artista, no sabes como hacer algo? observa en la vida real el comportamiento de este objeto, o cuerpo, la mayor parte del desarrollo de una buena ilustracion se basa en la observacion en ser detallista con las pequeñas cosas, la habilidad de simplificar formas complejas etc etc.
es por eso que en este caso cuando hago mis bocetos sigo principios basicos para la estructura anatomica, y aunque no sea perfecta funciona dentro de mi cabeza para comenzar a trabajar en ello.

Clean lines:

After the sketch comes the composition of the CLEAN base of what will be your illustration, in this case I started to define the lines of the face, where the eyes would be located, the hair, the shape of the hair, and the body... the ideal is that the characters have a recognizable silhouette for the human eye...

Despues del boceto viene la composicion de la base LIMPIA de lo que sera tu ilustración, en este caso comence a definir las lineas de el rostro, donde estarian situados los ojos, el cabello, la forma del cabello, y el cuerpo... lo ideal es que los personajes tengan una silueta reconocible por el ojo humano...

Defining the eyes, their color and shape

I wanted the eyes to give a look of being dead... because well, in some books I've read, like interview with the vampire, they suggest that vampires die as humans to be reborn as vampires so, I wanted to give it that essence of death, plus it would be a good contrast to the rest of the dark colors that were in my mind. a little dark circles under the eyes and that's it.

Queria que los ojos dieran un aspecto de estar muerta... porque bueno, en algunos libros que he leido, cómo entrevista con el vampiro, sugieren que los vampiros mueren como humanos para renacer como vampiros asi que, yo quise darle esa esencia de muerte, ademas seria un buen contraste para el resto de colores oscuros que estaban en mi mente. unas pequeñas ojeras y listo!.

Skin and shades

Here I used the base color of the skin, again in pale tones, nothing bright and shiny because I want it to keep that feeling of death in life, paleness etc.
and for the dress I worked in a bluish gray scale which helps me to give volume where I want to give volume and show the areas where the light reaches.

aca coloque de base el color de la piel, de nuevo en tonos palidos, nada brillantes y despampanantes porque quiero que mantenga esa sensación de muerte en vida, palidez etc.
y para el vestido trabaje en una escala de grises azulados el cual me ayuda a dar volumen en donde quiero dar volumen y mostrar las areas a donde llega la luz.

Black hair for the winn

at this point I realized that maybe I was doing something like a portrait of myself when I applied the color for the hair... who knew maybe I would cosplay my own illustration LOL I need some grey contact lenses XD.

llegados a este punto me di cuenta que quizá estaba haciendo algo parecido a un retrato de mi misma cuando aplique el color para el cabello... quien diría quizá haga cosplay de mi propia ilustración LOL necesito unos lentes de contacto grises XD.

I don't think I need to explain this too much... XD I gave volume to the bust in a scale of desaturated browns.

no creo que deba explicar mucho esto... XD le di volumen al busto en una escala de marrones desaturados.

And Voila! The end

If you ask me what was the most difficult thing to animate of all this, it was the candles (when i animate stuff like this i work frame by frame... mothe than 20 frames for this)... although it seems ridiculous... it depends on each person but for me it was the candles💀... I made modifications as you can see along the drawing... I didn't want it to be a painting in the beginning but as I was adding more details I was thinking about ways to make an animation to this illustration... I find it kind of funny because imagine walking down the corridor of an old mansion and seeing a painting do this blinking a couple of times and the painting is like nothing happened and almost as if it was all part of your imagination.... that's the kind of emotion or situation I wanted to project here, I hope I succeeded, I hope you liked it, this illustration and animation took me a whole day of work...

Si me preguntas que fue lo mas dificil de animar de todo esto_ fueron las velas... aunque parezca ridiculo... depende de cada persona pero para mi fueron las velas... hice modificaciones como pueden ver a lo largo del dibujo... no queria que fuese un cuadro en un principio pero mientras mas detalles iba añadiendo se me iban ocurriendo formas para realizarle una animacion a esta ilustracion... me parece algo gracioso porque imaginate estar caminando en el corredor de una mansion antigua ver que un cuadro haga esto pestañear un par de veces y que el cuadro este como si nada hubiera pasado y casi como si todo aquello hubiera sido parte de tu imaginacion... ese es el tipo de emocion o situacion que queria proyectar aqui, espero haberlo logrado, espero que les haya gustado, esta ilustracion y animacion me tomo un dia entero de trabajo...
