The amazing Neo-Byzantine style found in the Piarist Church in the center of Timisoara, Romania
Hello travelers
A short walk through the center of Timisoara brought me in the way a few interesting places, one of them is the Piarist Church, I found the name interesting, I had never heard of this church until now, so I decided to visit her and show it to you.
I am very curious if among those who visit my blog are people who have heard of Piarists?
Always a walk through the center of Timisoara is always a pleasure, there are so many options that you have at hand, including we can talk about relaxation, because we have several parks in the center with lots of greenery, even if it is hot outside here we can find an oasis of calm and shade.
Somehow on my way, the "fish fountain" in Victoriei Square is full of flower arrangements during this period, I noticed that it is a point of attraction here for those visiting the area.
After a few more steps I arrive in front of the Piarist Church, I look closer and notice that the entrance door was open, so come with me to explore this holy place.
The Piarists' Church is built in neo-Byzantine style, with traditional Hungarian and Baroque ornamental elements from the old Franciscan church, according to the design of the city architect Laszlo Szekely and consecrated in January 1912.
The Order of Piarist Monks was founded in Rome in 1597 and is a Roman Catholic order of monks, known for its mission to educate undifferentiated, universalist and strictly religious youth. Arriving in Timișoara in 1788, it was originally housed in the church of St. John Nepomuk and an old monastery of Bosnian Franciscan monks. St. John Nepomuk Church built in the 18th century fell into an advanced state of decay, came into the custody of the municipality and was demolished in 1911.
As a result, the Piarist monks started building a new church and school complex in 1909. From the crypt of the old church, the bones belonging to monks, Austrian soldiers and the town's personalities were moved. Among the bones were those of Johanna von Honrath, Beethoven's first love and later wife of Karl Grath. The old church
Francisc Valo was the last Piarist priest from Romania to live here and died in 2005. As a result, the church has been taken over by the priests of the Romanian-Catholic Theological High School
Gerhardinum. Masses and devotions to St. Rita of Cascia and St. Anthony of Padua are celebrated here in Romanian and Hungarian.
The Piariștilor Church, also known as the Church of the Catholic Teachers, was dedicated to the Ascension of the Holy Cross. It is located on Boulevard Regele Ferdinand 3, between Victoriei Square and Central Park. The church has a slender appearance, with a tall tower with a conical roof, it has two false buttresses that give it a unique appearance. The tower has a rosette with a cross and four false balconies with elongated windows on each side, in the middle.
The secondary altars were brought from Munich, the chapel has white ornamental motifs and gold polychrome, the columns with capitals have vegetal motifs, the statues of St. Mary, Christ, St. Ladislaus and St. Elizabeth are each framed in a niche. In addition to the vegetal ornaments, there are also floral motifs typical of the Hungarian tradition. Ferenczy József Ferenczy József painted the interior frescoes with scenes from the life of St. Joseph of Kalazan, the founder of the Piarist order in 1597. The pronaos columns have floral and cruciform decorations.
Let's take a look inside.
My dears, visiting a church should not be done just because you have to, but that place of worship must attract you, as it happened in my case, I had not heard of this church, so curiosity, but also attraction made me visit it.
By the way, the church is open daily from 8-6 and you don't have to pay to visit.
THE END!
