Crypto and politics in the US are a show everybody has their eyes into because it affects the rest of the world, being the USD the currency used internationally. Recently, a prominent cryptocurrency lawyer named John Deaton is considering challenging Senator Elizabeth Warren, a known cryptocurrency critic, for her Massachusetts Senate seat. This would be the first major challenge Warren faces from either party, and the first one from someone with tangible experience in the area she's so against.
Elizabeth Warren's popularity and financial resources make this attempt the best one yet, but still with too little backup. This potential race is seen as part of a wider effort by the cryptocurrency industry to influence the 2024 elections, with Deaton's background in law and personal story potentially appealing to voters. The support from the crypto community and other citizens that are not crypto users but believe in freedom is big in social media, but small compared to the followers of Warren.
Who is John Deaton
John Deaton, is Swansea attorney who has been a prominent advocate for cryptocurrency. He comes from a rough background, being the first member of his family to graduate. He joined the Marines Corps, and after that he created his own law firm and focused his career as an attorney helping asbestos victims.
On 2021 he worked on the case against Ripple Labs. Being an XRP holder himself, he argued he and other holders should be allowed to intervene. He's posture is that legislation are needed, but no regulations, and the dance of federal entities fighting over who has jurisdiction over the cryptocurrency industry should stop.
Deaton is also a cancer survivor, father of three daughters and the author of the book "Food Stamps Warrior".
Deaton's Participation in the 2024 elections
He's taking a "serious look" to enter the race against Warren, however, it has not been formalized yet. In the following days we should be receiving news on this case.
His party brought up that according recent polls, Warren has only 41% of support in Massachussets, so they feel confident they could win, but wouldn't stop at her direct candidature, since Warren is an effective fundraiser and can support other candidates to reduce Deaton's chances to the senate chair. They will aim to prevent her from rising money for others.
This election year coincides with the Bitcoin Halving, and after a long bear market this is a very expected event, and with Bitcoin gaining territory in the international economy, the pro-crypto parties are looking to influence the 2024 election, while the anti-crypto spread information (often false and misleading) about crypto being a tool for fraud.
