Splinterlands is the only web3 game I am currently playing with my full chest and hoping I hit the jackpot soon. Buying card packs and single cards has been the only way to grow my deck since I am not yet playing higher leagues to win cards at the end of the seasons. I can say that while opening card packs could be based on luck to a great extent, buying single cards (whether promo cards or in the general cards market) feels differently.
Sometimes, I'll have to get stuck with the decision of going for a card I think would rise in Price soon or a card that would give me a optimum gameplay outcome. It's always a hard decision to take each time I visit the cards market. With the volatility in the crypto market generally, one may not really trust if a certain card would go up in price sooner. I've had several experiences where I bought cards only to find them cheaper days, weeks after.
However, we have different reasons for engaging the splinterlands game, If it is purely for profit - asset holding, NFTs, DeFi, then one may have to consider the cost of the cards each time and the probability of improving or perhaps use in Lands. Players who prioritize te fun of the game over the business aspect would sure look out for card stats that would make them a great fit in battles. While I try to strike a balance, I think I get caught in the second category often.
I'm still learning to master Splinterlands battle but that doesn't stop me from participating in battle contests such as the Weekly Mage Secrets. The latest edition was for the Fire and Regret Ruleset and I had a battle experience I wish to share.
Fire & Regret Ruleset
This Splinterlands battle ruleset requires that _all units receive the Return Fire ability at the start of the battle. This means that enemy units that attack with ranged attacks receive damage back. The damage returned is equal to damage of the attacker divided by 2, rounded up. Also, Ranged attack units with the Reflection Shield ability do not take damage from reflected magic attacks. If the attacking monster has the Amplify ability, the damage it receives increases.
My selection for the battle wasn't really brilliant. I had some new cards purchased into my deck and was so obsessed at using the new cards I purchased that had amazing stats that I missed some very crucial details of the battle rulset. I ended up selecting two powerful range attack monsters with great stats and abilities but the rulset didn't let them maximize their potentials. let's see how the battle went.
The battle had a manna cap of 99. That called for the best of cards for each team. I was so lkeen at arraying those BIG STATS cards and did really concentrated on how to maximize the manna caps.
I fielded Six monster Life cards for the battle against the enemy's Six Water cards. My Life and neutral cards used were as follows:
- ShieldBearer- Corsair Bosun - Zyriel (Life and Death card) - Pelacor Arbalest - Time Mage - Arkemis The Bear
Choosing Zyriel (Life and Death card) and Pelacor Arbalest for the battle was so I could utilize the BIG attack stats of +3 and +4 respectively as a result of the summoner used. My calculations were to field high attack monsters that would deplete the health of the enemy monsters more easily, but I didn't take cognizance of the health of those monsters of mine and how they would react to the Fire & regret rule.
Fire & Regret Ruleset Needs just the Right cards
The presence of the two range attack monsters in my team was a flop. Both had high attack stats ad this made the return fire damage quite more significant. It was not fun to lose the battle especially with special cards like Zyriel in my rack. Below are screenshots of the battle arena through the 5 rounds of the battle for ease of understanding of the battle outcomes.

Round 7
My team lost the battle at the Seventh round and it showed how unfit my strategy was though with good cards on the deck.
