Digi-Prompts 012: Caught in a Scam or Staying Safe? |
---|
Have you ever been a victim of internet fraud? Maybe you clicked on a suspicious link or got tricked some other way. What happened, and what did you learn from it? If you haven't experienced it, share the safety measures you use to stay secure online. We could learn a thing or two. |
When talking about fraud, I remember the time when I first got my first credit card. At that time I didn't intend to have a credit card, I applied because a credit card salesperson came to me. I thought that my application would be rejected, but apparently, my application was successful.
Exactly a few days after getting the credit card, someone called me. He said that he was one of the staff from the bank who gave bonuses for having a new credit card. He gave me a bonus camera. Of course, I was excited. Not long after that call, the salesperson came to my office to give me the bonus, but he also asked for confirmation by swiping my credit card and taking 1,500 K or around USD 100. At that time I didn't realize how stupid I was. So when he left I just realized that he had just tricked me. When I called the bank, they couldn't help restore my limit, so I was forced to bear it myself. I paid the installments for the fraud.
Based on that bad experience, I became wary of anyone who called and claimed to be from the bank. Logically, the bank would not call its customers. So since then I never picked up calls from foreign numbers and foreign office numbers. That's so I don't get phished or scammed.
In addition, I started to protect my personal data by not uploading anything important like a biodata that could be misused. Because we don't know when we will be unlucky, while technology is increasingly developing, and fraudsters are increasingly innovating.
Finally, this is the most important way, to always reset your credit card before traveling far. Nowadays, the most common scam is that a credit card will be used when someone travels by plane and then gets a notification after their cellphone is connected to the internet again. For that, credit card users must pay attention check their credit card settings and deactivate all transactions. This is something I routinely do when traveling by plane. You know that hackers have a thousand ways to break into our cards.
So to summarize, to stay safe from scammers I implement the following:
- Don't pick up calls from strangers
- Ignore links from strangers
- Stop posting anything that brings up personal information
- Always set it so that it can't be hacked by anyone
How about you?

Hi, Halo, Annyeong! Welcome to my galaxy.
I have so much imagination in my head. Something that I can't achieve as a human and as a girl. So writing is very challenging. Since Junior High School, I have written whatever I want to write. Without skill, I just write what I want to read. Now I have 12th published novels and all of those are romance.
Yeah, I proudly say that I am a passionate author, traveler wannabe, and blogger.
