A Holy Place
During my time in Caracas, I have discovered that it is a city with deep spiritual roots, where devotion and faith are capable of mobilizing thousands of people under a single cause. Despite being a capital city full of modernity and with a strong foreign influence, we can still find places that keep traditions alive and at the same time have a great vital energy, whose history dates back to colonial times and even further.

Un Lugar Santo
En mi paso por Caracas he podido descubrir que se trata de una ciudad con profundas raíces espirituales, en donde la devoción y la fe son capaces de movilizar a miles de personas bajo una misma causa. A pesar de ser una capital llena de modernidad y con gran influencia extranjera, aún podemos encontrar espacios que mantienen vivas las tradiciones y que al mismo tiempo cuentan con una gran energía vital, cuya historia se remonta a la época colonial e incluso mucho más atrás.

A little east of the historic center of the city, there is a church whose past, as I understand it, dates back more than 200 years. Its façade reminds us of colonial architecture, while its surroundings are torn between the traditional, the modern, and the commercial. But there is no doubt that it is an imposing temple, where its bells ring out clearly and where thousands of people come to rediscover a deep and living spirituality.
Un tanto al este del casco histórico de la ciudad existe una iglesia cuyo pasado tengo entendido que se remonta a más de 200 años. Su fachada nos recuerda a la arquitectura colonial, mientras que su entorno se debate entre lo tradicional, lo moderno y comercial. Pero no cabe la menor duda de que se trata de un templo imponente, donde sus campanas resuenan con claridad y en donde miles de personas se acercan para reencontrarse con una espiritualidad profunda y viva.
But the real reason I wanted to visit and get to know this place is that it houses the remains of Dr. José Gregorio Hernández, a very important figure for us Venezuelans, as he was a scientist whose human qualities and moral values led him to become the first Venezuelan saint. Therefore, he is not only a revered figure today, but has become a true symbol and example of what it means to be human.
Pero la verdadera razón por la que quise visitar y conocer este lugar, es que en su interior se resguardan los restos mortales del Doctor José Gregorio Hernández, un personaje muy importante para nosotros los venezolanos, ya que se trata de un científico cuya calidad humana y valores morales lo llevaron a convertirse en el primer Santo venezolano. Por lo cual la actualidad no solo es un personaje venerado, sino que se ha convertido en un verdadero símbolo y ejemplo de lo que debería ser el ser humano.
Many miracles are attributed to his grace, and many stories surround his life, but today the solemnity of this church does justice to a legacy that has long transcended time and hearts.
Muchos milagros se le atribuyen a su gracia y muchas historias rondan su vida, pero hoy en día la solemnidad de esta iglesia la hace justicia a un legado que desde hace tiempo trascendió épocas y corazones.
Fortunately, I found a temple that was not too crowded, where I could fully enjoy a perfectly conditioned space, whose architecture is elegant and perfect, where the colors, materials, and furnishings are part of a whole that conveys a sense of peace and deep tranquility.
Afortunadamente, mee encontré con un templo poco congestionado, en donde pude disfrutar a plenitud de un espacio perfectamente acondicionado, cuya arquitectura es elegante y perfecta, en donde los colores, los materiales y el mobiliario parte de un conjunto que transmite una sensación de paz y profunda tranquilidad.
It is in places like this where we can appreciate the true power of faith. Many people were standing in front of certain altars, some others were just sitting on the benches, and occasionally I could see parishioners kneeling or simply standing, raising their prayers in search of an effective answer.
Es en lugares como este en donde podemos apreciar la verdadera fuerza de la fe, muchas personas estaban paradas frente a determinados altares, algunas otras solo se veían sentadas en las bancas y en ocasiones pude ver a feligreses de rodillas o simplemente estando de pie elevando sus oraciones en búsqueda de una respuesta efectiva.
The Church of Our Lady of Candelaria is a quiet place, yet welcoming and very bright, where natural light shines quite strongly, allowing us to feel comfortable in almost any space within the temple. I find this extraordinary, as it provides a very homely feeling, where the dimensions of the arches, the colonnades, and the gilding of the altarpieces are not visually overwhelming, but rather convey strength and uniformity.
La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, es un lugar silencioso, pero al mismo acogedor y muy claro, en donde la luz natural ilumina con bastante fuerza, permitiéndonos de esta manera sentirnos a gusto en casi cualquier espacio del templo, lo cual me parece extraordinario, ya que brinda una sensación muy hogareña, en donde las dimensiones de los arcos, las columnatas y El dorado de los retablos no son factores que abrumen visualmente, sino que nos transmiten fortaleza y uniformidad.
For as long as I can remember, churches have always caught my attention, and in Caracas I have had the opportunity to discover temples with incredible characteristics: some are small but full of details, and others are large and full of glory. But on this occasion, we find ourselves with a middle ground, one that offers simplicity, but at the same time, inside we find spaces full of grandeur, with incredible altarpieces, gleaming marble, and impeccably designed symbols.
Desde que tengo memoria, las iglesias siempre me han llamado mucho la atención y en Caracas he tenido la oportunidad de descubrir templos cuyas características son increíbles: algunos son pequeños, pero llenos de detalles y otros son grandes y llenos de gloria. Pero en esta oportunidad nos encontramos con un punto medio, uno que nos regala sencillez, pero al mismo tiempo en su interior encontramos espacios llenos de grandeza, con retablos increíbles, mármoles relucientes y símbolos impecablemente diseñados.
But best of all, it is a space whose doors are open to everyone equally, where the feeling of brotherhood and faith in Catholic beliefs create a truly incredible family atmosphere. I am particularly happy to have been able to experience this firsthand, where I could feel so much joy and devotion. I am sure that in the coming days, with the canonization of Dr. José Gregorio Hernández, this temple will be decked out in finery and celebration, as one of Venezuela's favorite sons will be recognized internationally thanks to his work, his legacy, and his example.
Pero lo mejor de todo es que se trata de un espacio cuyas puertas están abiertas para todos por igual, en donde el sentimiento de hermandad y la fe en las creencias católicas generan un entorno familiar realmente increíble. Particularmente, me siento muy contento de haber podido vivir en carne propia esta experiencia, en la cual pude percibir mucha alegría y gran devoción. Estoy seguro de que los próximos días, con la canonización del Doctor José Gregorio Hernández, este templo se vestirá de gala y de fiesta, ya que uno de los hijos predilectos de Venezuela logrará ser reconocido a nivel internacional gracias a su obra, su legado y su ejemplo.
