I wanted to know which regions in the world are the ones most prolific in searching for STEEMIT on Google, so I went looking for the answer.
Happily, Google provides a very useful little tool called Google Trends which allows you to find out which regions searches come from. You can even narrow it down into smaller areas too. The answer surprised me. I thought there would be lots of searches coming from more Western nations, such as the USA, UK, Canada and those in Europe.
But no, in fact African nations, South Korea and Venezuela are actually leading the pack for those who are using Google to search the term STEEMIT.
The top 10 regions searching the term "STEEMIT" are:
- Venezuela
- Nigeria
- South Korea
- Myanmar (Burma)
- Indonesia
- Bangladesh
- China
- Croatia
- Pakistan
- Slovenia

This map shows where the highest concentration of search terms comes from.
The more blue, the more searches
Why are these regions accounting for the most searches?
Well, obviously it's virtually impossible to say why people are putting the STEEMIT search term into Google, but it's interesting to me that a lot of these nations are experiencing grave economic hardship. Are we seeing the start of people turning to Steemit to help with the financial situation of people over there? I would theorise that this is possibly the case, and that in itself is making Steemit a powerful entity.
Promoting STEEM is a two way street for driving economic growth
One of the greatest ways that the Steemit platform can really help people is when people choose to become promoters. The more people who come onto the platform, and the more investment that is driven into the platform, coupled with the fact that almost everyone is happy to hold their STEEM as STEEM POWER (thus locked in for 3 months minimum) is driving an economy where demand will outstrip supply. And in an financial ecosystem, when this happens, the price goes up.
So it doesn't matter whether you are holding very little STEEM or are a whale sitting on tons of tokens. Ultimately, the more widespread adoption of the Steemit platform (and other sites that utilise the STEEM blockchain of course) means that the value of STEEM is going to rise.
We have started seeing this happen over the last few months, certainly since the start of the year (OK, we know there's been a bit of a fall recently, but this is being played out across the entire Cryptocurrency sector), and it's interesting that it wasn't that long ago we were all talking about the mythical $10 STEEM price. Well, I don't really think anyone is talking about that anymore. Now, I'm starting to see people talk about the $100 price, or maybe even $500 or $1000.
You're talking about a $1000 STEEM price? Holy shit!!!
Yes, I really am. And I don't think this is beyond the realms of impossibility in the next couple of years. Two years ago, the price of DASH was roughly the same as what STEEM is now.

Right now, whilst the price is still pretty low, there has been a significant amount of jubilance amongst people, especially those in the developing nations, where even a few dollars can make the difference between being able to buy food and other essentials. Can you imagine what it will be like when the STEEM price (and assumably the freed-from-its-dollar-tether SBD price) is up in 4 figures?
I've seen over the last few weeks the incredible changes to people's lives that your generosity and upvotes are making. Especially in some places in the world where economic hardship is hard to imagine for those like me who live in affluent Western nations.
I have, and continue to pledge, to spend time daily curating on promoters posts, and personally I tend to pay particular attention to the promoters in Africa, and I encourage you to do the same, finding what works for you.
We owe a real debt of gratitude to the people who are tirelessly campaigning for STEEM, and one of the things I've personally been involved in is the creation, and massive growth, of the #promo-steem tag, which is one of the fastest growing on the platform.
Remember, promoters are doing everyone a great service. Give them some love back!!!
