I used to love reality shows growing up.
During high school, I used to watch all the shows like Real World, Jersey Shore, Making the Band, Flavor of Love etc.
'Why did you like those shows?'
Not too sure....
During high school, it was just a way to unwind.
You don't really need to think too much.
Reality TV has content that you can just mindlessly watch and chill with.
By the time I entered the real world though, I realized that reality TV was no bueno.
A lot of drama, gossip & negativity.
Nothing I could learn from that!
So for the next few years, I cut out reality TV for good...
Well, recently, I decided to take a stroll down memory lane.
Decided that I was going to watch Making the Band.
It was a reality show released in 2000's where hip hop mogul Diddy, creates a band with hip hop musicians to get their career started.
I thought it was going to be mindless entertainment.
But nah... It was something MORE.
'What happened?'
I actually ended up learning.
The reality show gave me insights into people skills, what goes into running a business, different ways conflicts can arise on a day to day basis and much more.
After 40 minutes of watching 2 episodes, I felt educated.
But why though?
This was the same exact TV show that I used to watch back in the days.
What changed?
After thinking about this for a while, I had the light bulb moment.
The show didn't change....nah.
But I did.
I'm a much different guy at age 23 than I was at age 15.
I have more real world experience, social interactions, and businesses under my belt.
Therefore, I saw this experience from a different lens.
This has been happening a lot lately.
As of late, I have found a renewed passion for my co-operative business degrees. I found ways to combine co-operative capitalism & entrepreneurship.
Stuff that I used to experience are COMPLETELY different as I revisit them nowadays.
The ultimate point is not about watching reality shows.
But more so, about reviewing your past with your renewed self.
It's mind blowing what you will see.
If you were to tell me, I'd be learning about life from reality shows, I'd laugh at you.
But nowadays, it's a perfectly plausible statement.
When you reflect, you want to have some direction.
Otherwise, your mind will dwell. And when your mind dwells, you feel like shit because you default to negative memories & 'what if' scenarios.
Instead, find memories, hobbies & skills from your past that you enjoyed.
Then, relive it again.
Great communicators are able to turn anything into a story.
But the only way that you can do that is when you see multiple lessons in an experience, rather than just one.
And the only way you do that is when you go into your past as your mature self.
That's how you will view life through a different lens.
