In the Christian faith when the angel announced the conception of our Lord Jesus, the angel told Mary that Jesus would inherit an eternal kingdom, and that his throne would be that of David. This idea of Jesus as the continuator of a kingdom comes from a prophecy that Nathan made to David. Jesus is the personification of this Davidic Kingdom, Jesus is the "son of man", bringing a new spiritual covenant with humanity. But with Jesus the concept of Kingdom or Empire acquires a different and more universal character. This Kingdom that the Bible tells us about and teaches is the Kingdom of God: "Be holy, because I am holy" 1 Peter 1:16.
Just as God made a covenant with Abraham, about a promised land; he also made a covenant with David, about a kingdom, God's plan developed progressively until it was perfected with the arrival of Lord Jesus.
These were the words by which the prophet Nathan communicated to King David the promise of this Kingdom, which would not depend on human forces but on God, a Kingdom of justice and mercy (compassion, kindness) for all men, in this way God blessed the devotion and righteousness of his faithful servant David:
"The LORD declares to you that the LORD himself will establish a house for you: When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands. But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever" 2 Samuel 7:11-16.
