What even IS a Punk?
Since we're using the term PUNKS a lot in crypto lately, and now here on Hive, what exactly is a Punk?
The wikipedia article on Punk Rock says that Old Willie Shakespeare used it to mean a prostitute, but eventually it was a word for young dudes who were original gangstas.
By the 70s it was being applied to music coming out of the poorest part of Manhattan where Hilly Kristal opened a tiny club for Country Blue Grass and Blues music. He wanted bands that played original music and the bands that applied to play in his club weren't exactly playing any of that! CBGB became the best know Punk venue and many bands played there over the years.
Are We All Punks?
Well listen to this quote from trouser press about one of the earliest and maybe the best punk band's first record:
Like all cultural watersheds, Ramones was embraced by a discerning few and slagged off as a bad joke by the uncomprehending majority. It is now inarguably a classic.
Sounds a bit like crypto, right? Embraced by us kewl kids but looked down upon by many. We're soon to all be classics!
Also, the wikipedia article sited above says
Late 1970s punk music was anti-conformity and anti-mainstream
punk rock was "aggressively modern" and differed from what came before.
Technical accessibility and a do it yourself (DIY) spirit are prized in punk rock.
I say, YES, we're all Punks!
The Clash Were Punks
Their first album was full on punk, sounding a lot like the bands playing at CBGB such as The Ramones and The Dead Boys. Later they slowed down and got main stream and more commercial sounding. I guess that happens, but there is a certain raw energy one can access when they are a part of a new scene. Again, like US!
Dig this song, chosen for its energy and the fact that the video attached to it shows street scenes and punks of the day (mid 70s). Wikipedia article on this song.
