A growing percentage of the US population has been dying off in the past few decades due to obesity and very little in terms of government intervention has happened. Not to say that it’s their responsibility to curb a citizen’s eating habits, but educating the public on why certain foods are unnecessary for a normal diet would be a good start. This however, goes against the sole purpose of governments’ role in society, which is to profit off the people’s dependency by actually encouraging overconsumption.
From tax breaks on large corps—particularly in the food industry—and ever-so-subtle hints of purchasing more every holiday season, to the endless commercials and shows promoting the fattest foods, best weight-loss programs and newest anti-depressants. Our culture created in the governments’ image, thrives on the excesses and tries to prove to everyone that capitalism is key, God is real and the American dream is very much alive.
When it comes to food, the message is loud and clear: The more the better, the faster the better, the cheaper the better. It speaks volumes when vegetables, fruits and nuts get substantially less subsidies than most grains, dairy and sugars. These mass-produced industries makeup the backbone of the American diet and the lobbyists behind them are practically untouchable.
Making a stand against the unhealthy foods we all grew up eating is as easy as making a decision. Simply stop purchasing what your body doesn’t need. Ask yourself before you buy, how your body and mind will benefit from what you're consuming. Are you getting the calcium and proteins you need from milk and sweetened yogurts or are they simply commercialized fillers that you've known since childhood? Do you eat for nutrients or for nostalgia? Once you make a conscious effort in what you choose, you'll feel the benefits from what you get. Natural flavors will become more pronounced. As an added bonus, your food palette will become heightened and you'll begin to notice when something is overly sweet/savory.
Please note that staying active for 1-2 hours at least 3x per week is equally important. It motivates change when results are seen and felt as well as reinforces the decision of eating healthy foods over non-healthy ones.

Unless you have a better hummus recipe, I don’t believe the effort is worth the time when it comes to making hummus from scratch. I use this as a creamy base for many of my recipes.
Meats: Chicken, Ground Turkey, Tuna, Salmon, Pork (used sparingly: Chorizo, Sausage, Ham, Bacon)
Alt-Dairy: Almond Milk, Greek Yogurt (high protein, low sugars)
The best almond milk flavor-wise imho, however it is a bit costly. If used strictly for cooking, I recommend the Silk Unsweetened brand as well. It can be found in bulk at Costco.
Supplements: Protein Powder, Green Superfood Powder, Fish Oil, Apple Cider Vinegar
The best price to taste to volume ratio. It blends well with other items especially peanut butter, bananas and berries. Will be posting a smoothie recipe soon.
Flours: Oat, Arrowroot, Coconut
What’s the best way to get a lot of cheap oat flour? Buy this at Costco and blend in a Vitamix or an electric mill.
