Anglo-Saxon name: Eolh
Also known as: Elhaz
According to runic scholars, the original name for this rune is unknown and the current one was applied later. The names Algiz and Eolh are Old Germanic and Old English, respectively, for “elk.” 127 Rather than the animal, the Old English rune poem relates it to the plant elk sedge, which has sharp leaves that can cut when trying to pull it up with bare hands.
Defense and protection are the core aspects of this rune. Algiz also signifies new opportunities or challenges and a need to keep emotions under control. Give yourself room to maneuver during challenges and keep tabs on feelings that get stirred up to avoid going to pieces in times of transition. On a personal note, I strongly associate this rune with the gesture of epiphany and the manifestation of deity, which dates to the ancient Great Mother Goddess.
When selected for divination or guidance, Algiz advises awareness of unwanted influences. Don’t be in denial about or ignore negative things; set things right or turn them around and use them for positive opportunities.
