The sun had set, and Lif was cooking dinner. Her husband, Lifthrasir, sat around the cookfire with their children and grandchildren while dinner was cooking, telling stories.
"You know, Odin hid us in Hoddmimis Holt grove during Ragnarok," Lif started, smiling at her granddaughter, Greta. "Odin and the other gods and goddesses were always at odds with the giants, and in the end, they destroyed each other," she went on.
"And why would that be, mother?" Leif asked with a mischievous grin on his face.
"Only the gods knew the answer to this question, and the sons and grandsons of Odin would more than likely never tell us," replied Lifthrasir, taking a sip of his drink and setting it back on the table beside him. "But I am sure we can come up with ideas based on the tablets Odin hid," he added almost as an afterthought.
"I do not think the boys want us to go that far back, dear," Lif said, turning to her husband. "I think they want to hear about Fimbulwinter," she added as she turned to her grandchildren.
Olaf sat up a little straighter, "Grandmother, start where Skoll and Hati finally captured Sol and Mani."
Lifthrasir smiled as he loved the stories about Sol and her brother Mani. "Mundilfari was a prideful and arrogant man. So much so that he named his daughter Sol after the sun, and his son Mani after the moon. As punishment, the gods saw fit to make Sol drive the sun's chariot and Mani to drive the moon's chariot. This was as much to give the siblings something to do and to try to prevent Fenrir's sons, Skoll and Hati, from catching the sun and moon."
"Little good that did," laughed Harald.
"Right you are, Harald," Lif jumped in as she turned back to her family, smiling at her grandson. "Skoll and Hati did eventually catch Sol and Mani, plunging the world into Fimbulwinter. Three years of bitter cold winter with no end in sight. During this time, families turned against each other while the gods battled the giants.
"I still can't believe Loki was the culprit. I do not understand why Odin allowed him to be a companion to him and his son Thor," chimed in Greta. "Being born of giants and all," she added. "And his son Fenrir," here she trailed off, looking to her grandparents to continue the story.
"Well, in the end, he got what was coming to him. He may have killed Jörmungandr, but not before the midgard serpent, who was another of his sons, bit him causing him to die soon after of poison. Fenrir killed Odin, and Vidar avenged his death by slaying Fenrir. It was sometime during the battle Surtr set the world on fire, but we had already been hidden in hopes that we would repopulate the earth once it rose out of the waters that put out the fire Surtr started. In the end, most of the gods died. We are left with the sons of Odin and Thor," Lif finished as she started dishing out the food to her family.
