There is also a difference between "having the experience" and "living the life" of enlightenment. The first may be fleeting or even spontaneous, whereas the latter requires both the capacity and some technique in order to return to that state - a state known as rigpa within Dzogchen and, as stated in the article, there are subtle different phases of rigpa.
At the deepest (or highest) level the experience is totally selfless, hence cannot be described as it is happening but when conscious self-awareness returns there is a mixture of the two states, so that some descriptions can be made.
