In this demonstration, a secure key was generated from a quantum satellite called Micius that launched in August 2016. This satellite creates photons suspended in superposition. The peculiar properties of a single photon can be used to generate a random sequence of bits as the encryption key.
Due to the principles of quantum mechanics, it is impossible for outsiders to read a message without altering it.
