The hippocampus is deep in the temporal lobes, is closely related to the declarative type memory, which as its name implies, is that which we can declare. The declarative memory is divided into episodic, which is what you can declare about your personal experiences (for example, what you did yesterday), and semantics, which is what you can declare about events or data that you learned from third parties but did not experience (for example, who discovered America).
