I never thought the biggest change in my life would come from such a simple decision I made quietly one night: "From now on, I’m going to love myself first."
For as long as I can remember, I tried to please everyone. I hated disappointing people. I was scared of being called selfish. Even when I was tired or hurt, I’d say, “It’s okay, as long as they’re happy.” But deep inside, there was this small voice growing louder every day: "And what about you? Who’s taking care of you?"
I reached a point where I didn’t even know who I was anymore. I didn’t know what I liked, what I felt, or what I needed. I felt completely disconnected from myself.
It Started With One Question One night, I was crying quietly in my room, feeling like I wasn’t enough. I kept thinking I was always falling short. That I didn’t deserve love. Then I asked myself something that changed everything: “If my best friend were feeling this way, what would I tell her?”
I knew the answer immediately: I’d tell her she’s strong. That she deserves love. That she shouldn’t let anyone make her feel less than who she is. And then I thought… why don’t I say that to myself?
My First Steps Toward Self-Love That was the beginning of my self love journey, a path I never thought I’d walk but needed more than anything. It wasn’t magical or fast. It was slow and honest — but it was real.
Here are the first things I changed:
I started writing one thing I liked about myself every day — even if it was something small like my smile or the way I care for others.
I stopped apologizing for my feelings or pretending I was okay when I wasn’t.
I learned to say no without guilt — one of the most important steps in my personal transformation.
I began choosing people who brought me emotional peace rather than those who drained me.
What Changed? I’m still the same girl, but I finally hear my own voice now. I realized I don’t have to be perfect to be loved. I don’t have to fix everything or carry everyone’s burdens.
Now, I laugh louder, cry when I need to, and show up for myself — fully, completely, unapologetically.
Loving yourself isn’t selfish — it’s survival. It’s the first step toward emotional healing, peace, and becoming the version of you that you were always meant to be.
Written with love, by a girl who finally chose herself.
