This is for the #ShirtOnSunday theme started by @hockney. Most of them are about music, but they can be for anything. He has posted about shirts for a zoo and a bridge.
This (unironed) shirt is one I got back in 2014 when I contributed to a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for the GnuPG project. If you do not know GnuPG is an open source implementation of PGP encryption. This is widely used for secure emails, but also to digitally sign things like software repositories. At the time I believe it was largely down to one guy, Werner Koch, to maintain this vital software. The project site needed maintenance as well as covering other costs.
As a fan of encryption I wanted to support it and donated enough to qualify for a shirt. It seems 1072 people donated nearly 37,000 €. A few hundred of those qualified for the shirts.
I think that since then some big companies have made some substantial donations, so I hope the project is financially secure now. A lot of the big internet companies depend on open source software and they really should pay something back out of their massive projects. Open source software is generally free to use, but that does not mean it does not deserve donations. I have said before that I would love to see some of these projects using Steem as they could be earning from every update they post.
Encryption could help in verifying that a given Steem account really does belong to a given person or project to reassure people that their votes go to the right one. You can digitally sign a post and verify it with Keybase. I know a lot of Steemians are on there. You can use it to verify your identity on a lot of the big social sites. If someone has the skills then we could get Steem integrated into their listed sites.
