Throughout my life, I always tried to avoid any work that seemed unnecessary to me and I believe that it is not laziness rather it is energy saving or smartness. In my school, we used to have monthly tests but I never gave them a damn because I was convinced that they are unnecessary work. I knew that they do not matter much instead the final exams are the only important thing to be worried about.
I studied the whole year like a snail or like a tortoise and I only kept the final exams in my mind. In the monthly tests, I used to fail and my parents some times scolded me and my classmates thought that they are better and clever than me. But I always beat them in the final exams because my policy was to study for the final exams.
So avoiding unnecessary work is not laziness. Throughout my life, I never tried to memorize anything except formulas. I think I thought that memorizing was an unnecessary work. I always tried to learn and know things and my slogan was that if I know something then why should I memorize it? If one thinks that he needs to memorize something then probably he does not really know it well. Once a friend of mine argued with me and I asked him a question: Can you write a 500 words essay about your father right now? He said yes why not? I asked him did you memorized it? He said NO. Then I said that this is my idea that if you really know something you never need to memorize it.
So avoiding unnecessary work is not laziness. I love mathematics and I am good at it. But I never practiced it much. I only learned and mastered the rules and when I know a rule I do not need to solve 100 sums that can be solved just by using that one rule. I never solved mathematical exercises instead I read the rules and I read the examples only. So avoiding unnecessary work is not laziness instead that saves mental energy.
When I teach my son his mathematics we do not write much. We first understand the concepts orally and only in last 3 months we write. I do not let my son write much because if he will write we will only be able to solve 10 questions in an hour but when I write I solve about 30 questions. When I want to test him I put a question in front of him and I ask him to dictate me what should I write. He says add 445 and 996 and he says divide the answer by 40 and the result will be our answer. In this way, he learns the whole mathematics. This saves our time because I write faster. When we get close to exams I ask him to hold the pen to solve by himself and we are using this strategy since 4 years and he never brought less than 85% marks.
So all works are not necessary. We can and should avoid unnecessary works. It is wisdom, not laziness.
