I just read an article that artificial snow is being made for a skiing contest (Norwegian), despite that we've had quite a lot of snowfall in the region this year.
The quality of "wild" snow is just not considered good enough for a top-notch world competition. The boss of the championship is quoted with "it would not work out".
While he probably do have a point that consistent and predictable conditions are important when the world champion is to be declared, I'm actually a bit shocked to learn that holding a skiing competition on natural snow "will not work out". I guess the sport of skiing have moved quite far away from the kind of skiing I do.
